depakote and anger

Posted by deerock on August 17, 2009, at 22:40:03

hi, i am on day 4 of depakote. im up to 750 mg per day. i dont know what my diagnosis is. i think its panic disorder and GAD but i think i have some BPD symptoms as well, although whenever i ask if I have that nobody ever confirms that i do.

anyhow, since i started the depakote, i feel more angry. today i slammed the door in my therapists office and threw a cup of tea all over the bathroom.

ive been dealing with anger issues but i have never acted out like that in her office in 2 years...and i go 3 times per week.

i think it may be the depakote, of course my pdoc says it probably isnt. has anyone heard of this kind of reaction? maybe i should go down a dose.

I would say yip, depakote. That happened to me and I also became more depressed. It got worse when I increased the dose.
I can't believe your dr doesn't think it could be the depakote.

I have unipolar depression, no BP, but depakote knocked me out. Made me feel like a zombie. My pdoc kept pushing it and the more I took the worse I felt. But I didn't feel any anger. I was much too zoned for that.

Hy, Depakote caused the same reaction to me.I had been diagnosed with GAD and slight bipolar, so after trying a lot of AD's, benzos and so, I decided to have a trial of divalproex at 500mg/day plus 2mg Klonopin taken at night, no AD or other psy med.The first few days I felt dizzy, a little bit nauseated and somehow social friendly but with that I noticed an increased anger and iritabillity.Like more confident I felt, more cranky I was. After one week I had to stop, it were too much, the anger was unbearable, arguing and swearing all day long, an strange sensation of dizinhibition, hypomania type.Go figure, just the opposite effect that I waited for.The other thing that scared me a lot was that the anger came with an deep depression (suicidar ideation), so i stopped cold turkey and after 2-3 days things returned to (not so good but tolerable)normal. The same reaction happen with an similar trial with phenytoin and topiramate.Better results I've had/have with an relative small dose (200-400 mg)of old and good long lasting carbamazepine taken at bed with 2 mg Klono.Hope that helped.

You're welcome.I've noticed along years that not so many peole who write on this board encountered these side effects from mood stabilizers, especially depakote. My trials along years with dep. were 2 and no more than 1 week eack due these NASTY side effects. My dx is GAD, social anxiety, some mid level depression(due tu GAD and SAD)and soft signs of bipolar. As a side note, now I'm o a trial of Lithium(carbonate, normal release), thirh day, 250 mg/day and I'm not so happy, restlesness, agitation, disorientation, muscular weakness and big time nervousness!I've already destroyed my cell phone...Not so encouraging. If you have more questions,I would be happy to respond!Be well!

Tegretol has a firmly established efficacy to treat anger and poor impulse control. Trileptal, a sister drug to Tegretol seems to be of equal effectiveness, but doesn't carry with it the same liability of producing side effects and the risk of precipitating agranulocytosis. I have seen it work especially well in several young men. Zoloft seems to have some efficacy in treating anger and hostility, too.
