Have you tried MAOI's before? There are many people on here who have experience with Nardil...correct board to seek advice for sure.

Hi,
If your depression is atypical then Nardil can work when no other ADs have. Signs of atypical depression are:
A. Mood reactivity (i.e., mood brightens in response to actual or potential positive events)
B. At least two of the following:
1. Significant weight gain or increase in appetite ("comfort eating")
2. Hypersomnia (sleeping too much, as opposed to the insomnia present in melancholic depression)
3. Leaden paralysis (i.e., heavy, leaden feelings in arms or legs)
4. Long-standing pattern of interpersonal rejection sensitivity (not limited to episodes of mood disturbance) that results in significant social or occupational impairment.

The MAOIs are worth a try if all of the others fail. I believe they should be 2nd tier medications, after SSRIs, for atypical depression.
Godd Luck,
Jedi

Nardil and Parnate and Clomipramine were, and still are, the kings of the antidepressant world. In 50 years, there still has not been any drug invented that outperforms them.

If you haven't already, another option is to combine serotonin and norepinephrine meds, for example, Zoloft + Nortriptyline. The hype of Cymbalta and Effexor accomplishing that is, well, hype. They have such small action on norepinephrine compared to serotonin. You want a balanced effect on both, which can only be achieved with an MAOI or with two different meds.

Bleauberry,

Is zoloft/nortrip a combo that is proposed regularly for anxiety disorders like SAD/GAD or would that lend to increased anxiety do you think?

Hi again,
I would say, given your symptoms, that Nardil would be worth a trial. I wouldn't say that three weeks was long term rejection sensitivity, but if you think back it has probably been longer than that. I am over 50 and my social anxiety with rejection sensitivity started in my early teen years. I really wish I would have been treated for it back then, since longstanding social anxiety can affect all aspects of a persons life.

And sleeping 12 hours daily would count as hypersomnia. In the past, I would sleep just to escape the pain of the depression. Pretty hard to be productive, when you are sleeping away your life.
Good luck in your pursuit of wellness,
Jedi
