awwww..puppy eyes..hard to resist..I know what you are saying about Zoloft. I often feel that on the SSRI's. Sometimes adding Ritalin helps get some zip back..allows you to focus and keep on task..maybe you could mention that to your pdoc at your next appointment and see what they say.

The feeling you describe is actually rather common with serotonin based antidepressants such as Zoloft, Celexa, Lexapro, Prozac, Paxil, Luvox, Effexor, Cymbalta. It is not unique to Zoloft. It is commonly called SSRI induced apathy. No downs, but no ups either.

It is theorized to be a result of too much serotonin squashing out the action of norepinephrine and dopamine, which are the get-up-and-go motivational pleasure hormones. To keep the good effect of Zoloft, but add back some motivation and pleasure, meds commonly added to the SSRI for that include Ritalin, Provigil, Nortriptyline, Desipramine, and even...weird I know...an antipsychotic like Abilify or Zyprexa.

At sites where patients rate their experiences with meds, Provigil has the highest praise by a long shot for motivation, energy, pleasure, antidepression. Some doctors really like adding a TCA antidepressant like Nortrip or Desip. Some go for the stimulants like Ritalin. The whole idea is to boost the other neurotransmitters to balance out the boosted serotonin.

I sometimes think of SSRIs not as antidepressants, but as anti-emotions. Emotional anesthetizers. Good for someone in deep darkness. But once out of that darkness, it is not uncommon to have to add a different med to get a more rounded effect.

Yeah, and I noticed that at websites where patients rate their own meds, the antidepressant (and not even an antidepressant actually) that rates by far higher than any others is Tramadol (Ultram). People were initially prescribed it for post-operative pain or something, and discovered by accident that after years of trying lousy antidepressants they actually felt like their old selves again on Tramadol. Most antidepressants scored about a 3.2 on a 1-5 scale, with Tramadol at a 4.2. Huge difference.

Anyway, the point is this. Almost all of them agreed they were dependent on the drug. They felt the power of withdrawals when they missed a dose. They are addicted. But, and it is a huge but, they are living fullfilled lives with vibrant jobs, renewed careers, happy families, energy, creativity, hobbies, everything.

One has to kind of decide do they want to be addicted and productively healthy, or unaddicted and chronically ill.

The same issue applies to Provigil, which also by the way scored a 4.2, way above other antidepressants.

If I had to make the choice of being addicted on something and yet alive to enjoy the world, or to be a housebound ridden disaster, well, I'll take the addiction thank you.

Try stopping the Luvox. I think you'll find you are addicted to it. Not in the sense that you crave a dose, but in the sense your body cannot go without it. Provigil, Luvox, Effexor, Zyprexa...all of these drugs get people "hooked".
