What color is your urine? (Seriously)

Posted by SLS on December 10, 2008, at 15:17:22

I observed many years ago that the color of my urine changes with changes in the severity of depression and upon responding to treatment.

My urine is clear when I am feeling more depressed, and an almost fluorescent yellow when I begin to respond to treatment. It can fluctuate from day to day or even hour to hour. It is always a reflection of my current depressive state.

The pigment in the urine that gives it a yellow color is called urochrome. It is my guess that the change of color from clear to yellow is an index of protein turnover. There might be a growth hormone thing going on here.

the only change I notice is whether I'm hydrated or not. But this was the week's most awesome post ;)

I do relate Scott, as my urine appears clearer as my mood deteriorates..... vitamin supplement aside.

Depressed moods = colorless urine, no matter what my diet consists of. When I'm feeling better, I definitely notice a tint of color, not fluorescent yellow like a vitamin B would do, but there is "some" color enhancement.

Regards, Rick

Urine color is always going to fluctuate from hour to hour -- it depends on how hydrated you are, among a lot of things, what you eat, when you have taken medication or supplements.

Hmm... I hadn't heard that one but I know that if your urine is solidly bright yellow other than if you just took a vitamin or something, you're not getting enough fluids daily. The kidneys are working overtime to process waste.

But all of this is hard to tell if you've never had a baseline (your norm) in a physical some previous years back, just like other tests that are performed

As for myself -- well white when I've drunk a lot of fluids and more color when I haven't in general.

It is my opinion, of which I am confident, that the color of my urine is a reflection of the severity of my state of illness and an index of treatment response.

I hydrate myself the same throughout the day, everyday. I do not take extra vitamin B supplements other than what is contained in my multivitamin. Even when I took supranutritional dosages of B vitamins, my urine was clear, everyday. It isn't until I respond to treatment that it changes color and becomes yellow. The difference is striking, and in consideration of my powers of observation, I must say that I believe this change in color is a reflection of the improvement in the severity of the depressive state. My guess is that it is an increase in nitrogen turnover that produces this shift in the color of urine to display more yellow urochrome.

I would love to know the physiology going on here.

Interesting thread. I haven't noticed a realtionship to my mood state, but I'll start watching it!

As a singer, I have to be particularly careful to keep well-hydrated (especially in cold weather - low humidity). One of my mentors has a saying for singers: "Pee Pale".

It's good advice for non-singers, too, there have been studies that find more than half the population is underhydrated a lot of the time. I used to pop T1-s like candy for what I thought were tension headaches until someone persuaded me to try just drinking two glasses of water instead. Result: no more headaches!

If you have a lot of medications on board, its likely your urine is going to be of some color, so the paler it is the better as it will be easier on your kidneys.

If you take a multivitamin or Vitamin C, it will be brilliant anyhow, and that's not a low hydration state, its just a result of pigmentation reaction in a sense.

There is also a thing of too much hydration -- hyperhydrosis, and yes, you can die of excess water, but this typically only occurs under a few states, diabetes insipidus, psychosis states, and tragedies involving not monitoring carefully the amount of water intake in intense physical activity.
