Effexor XR to Serzone!

Posted by thinkingitover on November 18, 2008, at 16:51:44

Hi All,
My pdoc has decided that with my metabolic issues (weight gain) with SSRIS to have me wean off my effexor XR dose of 37.5 MGS/ day and try Serzone instead. We've been over the liver issues, etc... I am going to wean off the effexor by moving to immediate release and quartering the pills to keep my life from being too h*llish. But what to expect on the Serzone? Is there a standard dose range for treating anxiety/panic? I will also be taking valium and Topamax with it. How long does it take to work? How does it work? Any positive input would be appreciated.
Thanks!

I was on Serzone for two years and I loved that stuff so much. I have anxiety/panic disorder and it really helped. I don't recall any side effects, maybe it made me sleep good in the beginning but that was a positive. I also don't recall how many mg's I was on. I changed doctors and my new doc took me off the stuff because of the black label or whatever it's called, the potential liver issues. I am now on Lexapro which is the only SSRI that I can tolerate with no side effects. Good luck, I hope the Serzone works well for you which I'm sure it will.

I was on Serzone for years for Anxiety and Panic d/o. I couldn't tolerate SSRI's or Tricyclics, but had no problem getting on Serzone. Getting off was pure hell, but I have that problem with all meds. Serzone is an antagonist at the 5ht2a receptor that you don't get from Effexor. This receptor is thought to play a huge part in anxiety and panic. I developed poop out from it and didn't know where to turn. After failing all other meds and 18 months has gone by from weaning Serzone, I'm going back on it to see if will work again. I'm starting at 100mg twice per day. I'll update you on my progress.

Serzone I started at low doses no side effects from it only from going off luvox so will stay on the starter dose of 50mg. I'd love to hear how you do on the serzone. Isn't it a antihistamine type med? Phillipa

yeah, I was on Serzone for 10 years almost. Its solid for anxiety and panic for sure. Not so amazing for depression. But side effects are not bad at all, they usually disappear within 2 weeks for me. You sleep really heavy and prepared to be a little "zoned" out for the first 2 wks, but that goes away. Plus it doesn;t kill libido which makes it speecial in the world of AD's.

I have used low doses of Nefazodone for years to augment the effects of SSRIs/SNRIs. It's a great hypnotic/anxiolytic. However, beware of the initial side effects of excitation/agitation/irritability. These side effects are most likely related to its active metabolite (m-CPP). However, for most people, these effects are transient as the parent compound begins to take effect. Also, realize that any time you increase the dosage, you might have a similar adjustment period.
