Heard and read last years shot only contained two strains of flu and this year many more got mine last week. Are you getting one this year? Love Phillipa

Didn't know the flu was active yet. Sounds like a long season. Sorry you got it. Phillipa

Sorry to hear that -- no guarantees :( I think its about an 80% effectiveness at best, could be more or less, but what it does also is keep potential carriers of flu from infecting others, I believe.

It lasts one year more or less.

As for the 2008-2009 Influenza Shot strains recommended by the CDC and WHO and I believe included in all the 6 possible suppliers of vaccination or inhalant are:

A/Brisbane/59/2007 (H1N1), A/Brisbane/10/2007 (H3N2), and B/Florida/4/2006 strains.

Although one usually has an idea they have the flu, there are literally probably more than 60 types of rhinoviruses (winter) and corona viruses (typically spring to summer) that may be interchangeably called a "cold" or a "flu".

Influenza though is usually more notable by the amount of fever, and is worst actually in teenagers (close quarters probably, college, etc.) and the aged (as a general rule).

The average person, from what I was told by a infectious disease specialist, gets up to 5 infectious diseases a season. A number of them get unnoticed because they are gone in a day or you are merely a carrier.

Of course as they say, your miles may vary.

It's still a good idea to get a flu shot though for most people and has become easier now in most locations because pharmacists can give them for a nominal fee if they've taken a training course (I don't know if that varies by state)

You're both right, it's probably not the flu, just a really bad virus. I'm not thinking too clearly right now...stuffed head does that to me

I get one every year. My husband is someone who falls into the higher risk category, so it's imporant to me to avoid exposing him if I can.

Skipped last year but it really didn't matter as the two strains the shot contained were the wrong ones. I was glad when I google it to see that the shot this year contains a lot more strains. Did get sick last winter Christmas. Never even get colds so must be a carrier. I think when nursing I build resistance to a lot of germs. Hopefully some still are in effect not neccesairily flu but thing like MRSA. Since that has spread to the community and no longer hospital contained. Phillipa

It could also be that you have very good handwashing habits from your nursing days. It definitely helps. :)

GeeGee funny didn't until this year when heard about the MRSA being in the community yes at work always did and double gloved. But now wont even touch door knobs in public bathrooms and The ones I use have moved their disposal baskets to the doors as seems most I talk to once their hands are clean won't touch them either. Won't sit anymore either used to. Love Phillipa

As long as you don't pee on the seat. Hate that. That's what paper is also for...to sit on.

I didn't know it had spread outside of hospitals. Its a bad problem and one due to both overuse of antibiotics and the problems of isolating patients and not sterilizing enough. I do know that vancomycin is still the last resort of antibiotic in the US as teicoplanin was only limited approved by the FDA.

Synercid, Zyvox, and Tygercid are the only ones that will treat some types of cases that are too complex for vancomycin.

Wash your hands and don't touch your face or eyes. Easier said than done as we all have that habit. I'm not saying that applies to MRSA but it applies to contact infection.

And if vanomyacin fail hail flesh eating disease. Phillips Last year hear it was in all the public schools and playgrounds MRSA that is hence the biggest reason didn't stay overnight in the hospital when had surgery as our own homes those germs we're used to.
