coming off of Effexor xr

Posted by Rissykay on October 14, 2008, at 16:09:16

I just read a post about this and lost it in registering for this sight, but I am going through bad withdrawl symptoms also. I have been on it for 6 years-since i was diagnosed w/breast cancer and all the surgeries and chemo threw me into menopause at 34. My dr. has not wanted me to get off as I repeatedly ask. So i have gone down from 75mg to 37.5 for 2 weeks and now nothing. I am a basket case. So they called in a new prescription, get this:1 37.5 mg. pill every 3 days for 4 doses, then 1 pill every 4 days for 4 doses and so on... anyone ever heard of this?????

Going from 37.5mg to 0mg is typically the worst part. Dr. Phelps (a pdoc in Oregon) recommends using the prozac bridge to ease the symptoms of Effexor withdrawal. Below is a link with the details:

Thanks for that-very interesting article. I've told my doc(actually the nurses because dr. won't call me back) that i am not comfortable starting the 37.5 theory again with effexor, and mentioned this prozac theory, we'll see what they say, if they don't agree, I'm not going on anything and will ride out this nightmare roller coaster.

Is it okay to add that I'm so sorry about the cancer and hope it's in remission? Love Phillipa

A better strategy is to take 10mg prozac once every 2 or 3 days, and in the meantime customize your own doses of effexor. You can do that by dumping out the contents of a capsule and counting out a custom dose. You are not restricted to 37.5mg. You could make 35mg, 30mg, 26mg, 18mg, whatever the heck you want. Just keep reducing it by 1/2mg to 1mg every day or so.

The method they have you doing is going to send you through repeated withdrawals every time that last dose wears off. That's where prozac can help, as it lasts many days instead of hours.

I TENDED TO AGREE WITH YOU ON THE EFFEXOR WITHDRAWL PLAN THEY WANTED TO PUT ME ON, SO I REFUSED AND CALLED MY OTHER DOC. WHO SAID THE SAME THING AS YOU WITH PROZAC. tHANK YOU-IT MAKES ME FEEL BETTER TO HEAR MORE PEOPLE SAY THAT!
