Was this a hypertensive episode?

Posted by mickapoo on September 3, 2008, at 15:46:41

Last night I got a terrible chest pain and even though my heart wasn't racing, it was pounding. I started to get clammy but that passed soon. This is unlike anything I ever experienced. I didn't get the headache so I didn't think it was a classic hypertensive crisis.

The only thing I had to eat about an hour or so earlier was maybe 2 bites of an all beef Angus hotdog (not the ones full of "mechanically processed stuff). I also had chicken, I thought maybe that was it, because it had been opened, in the refrigerator, for about 4 days before I cooked it. Could that have been it?

Others may have more to say, but it sounds as if it could have been the beginnings of one. It did pass, but you might want to stop the Maois-- if that's what you're taking-- for a week or two. It would be a good idea to call your pdoc, and talk about the situation.

Depending on what kind of hotdog you ate-- and the ingredients-- that could be it. Of if the chicken had been left out in the sun, or otherwise could have been spoiled, that could also have caused a reaction.

You didn't have most of the classic symptoms, but on the other hand, chest pain and clamminess do seem to be part of the reaction. You really need to have a home BP machine, so you can test your blood pressure.

Yes, a home BP I think is a must on MAOI's, and the arm cuff one, not the wrist one. I ate out one night and my BP went quite high and was staying high. I didn't have a crisis, but was monitored for 3 hours at the ER. I also think the 4 day old chicken could be suspect. If I don't plan to eat leftovers by the next day, I pop them in the freezer.

I definitely don't plan on doing that again. It wasn't spoiled, but it was uncooked so maybe from now on I should cook it within a day or so of opening the package.

Anyway, I guess I should get a blood pressure monitor. If I do, at what blood pressure should I go to the hospital? Is there a certain number or does it differ from person to person?

I was worried this time because of the chest pain and heaviness in my chest.

4 day old chicken could give you food poisoning. When I went into hypertnsive crisis, my bp was off the charts, and I felt like my head had exploded. I ended up in the cardiac intensive care unit.

Wouldn't food poisoning give me nausea, vomiting, etc? I had chest pain with my heart pounding. It seemed ok, as far as being spoiled, it wasn't left out or anything.

Yes you would be sick as a dog I would think. I'm not an MAOI but have had chicken uncooked in the refrid more than four days. Love Phillipa

Food poisoning -- especially salmonella shows up very quickly and one would be vomiting quite instantly.

There are lots of explanations, it could have been a hypertensive crisis, or it could have been random anxiety or a random heart event.

When was the last time you had your thyroid checked?

You might have had a dysautonomic episode that sometimes occurs when one is beginning to respond to antidepressant treatment.

How are you feeling otherwise?

Oops.

I forgot to ask what other medications you might be on. What is the dosage of Parnate you are currently taking?

During the hypothetical dysautonomic episode, did you experience dry mouth, sweating, dizziness to the point of passing out, increased heart rate upon standing, or blurry vision?

I am on only Nardil (75 mg) and Lamictal (300 mg). I've been on these for about 6 weeks or so (the Nardil- been on other medications prior to that). I only had a very sharp pain in my chest, clamminess, and my heart was pounding. No problems since then. It sounds from the other posts that it probably had nothing to do with the MAOI. ? I've never experienced anything like that and with all the dangers of MAOI, or so they say, it immediately made me think of that.

Thanks for your response!

I think it would be best to ask your doctor what it was.
