adderall

Hi,
I'm a 57 year old woman who 4 days ago started on Adderal xr 10 mg....recently diagnosed through neuro-psyche testing for ADD. So, this medicine makes me feel manic...like I could jump off of an 80 story building and still live...really intense...focused yes, but intense.
Would reducing the dose help?

i don't like adderall much, because of what you are talking about.
it may just be start up reaction and can wear off.

but Ritalin was a LOT better for me.
also Strattera didn't do that for me, was a nice little appetite suppressant, although it didn't give me the ADD assist i needed either.

but i'd talk with your doc about it. if you are constantly having increase heart rate it could be a problem. otherwise give it a couple weeks and see if it calms down.
if not i say switch it.

thats' just my opinion.

other more qualified persons will hopefully chime in here.

Some evidence points to its neurotoxicity. Why not look at the FREUD and COCAINE thread for everyone's opinions> From a safety perspective you are likely better off taking one of the other drugs.

Adderall (brandname) has been used since 96 as an ADD med, -in the 1960's as an a diet pill-AKA same formulation.

Hi west,

My point, perhaps in a roundabout way, is that amphetamines have been the most studied, researched med there is, since ~1930, and the studies show that when not abused are safe can be used long term, and indeed can be nuroenhancing/protective-D-amp has shown efficiency in alzheimers neuro trauma.

Adderall, being a mix of Dex sulphate, dex aspartate, amphetamine sulphate, amphetamine succarate, has been in use for decades, and has been studied to show it's usefullness/toxecity.

I do not/have never taken it.

I have a aquantaince who takes it, 30mgs Q.I.D for some years, and is doing well, no high/buzz# (she can sleep after takin it)just to function, after Ritalin, 20mgs 5x daily proved inferior, shes ~50.

I am willing to take your word on its safety/toxicity providing you show me one study which stands as testament to that fact. Even better if it's from 1930, although screening for a drug's neurotoxicity is something recent leap in drug science. That your friend has taken it for 30 years does not necessarily answer any questions regarding its effect on the brain.

The 10 mg dose you are taking is low. People are often extremely sensitive to stimulants at first but that goes away after a few weeks. I take 80 mg Adderall which would be somewhat less for the extended release form. The XR version would surely keep me up at night. A lot of people on here are recommending other drugs, but studies show that amphetamine, not ritalin, is usually more effective for ADULT ADD than ritalin and all its cousins. I've tried ritalin before and it just made me irritable, no real benefit. Adderall is the smoothest--i.e., longest lasting, with very gradual decrease in blood levels--ADD drug available for adults; therefore you're much less likely to "crash" on it than you are on most of the other drugs and therefore less likely to abuse it.

My son took aderall at one time. He was 6 years old at the time. As usual it was a trial and error thing. As we would increase the amount he would respond better to the medication until one day when he started having terrible temper tantrums. He also began telling me he was stupid and worthless. He told me that he needed to be dirt. I feel at no time should a child be brain washed by medication to feel something that is completely not true. My son did have to change medication and continued them until this year. We are currently trying and all natural alturnative. Hope this helps you.
