Question about a sloshing brain

Posted by Dinah on August 8, 2008, at 10:21:31

Sometimes I have the distinct impression that I can feel my brain moving. Maybe being a beat behind me when I move my head. Or just feeling a bit sloshy.

I've always associated it with those weird medication side effects that are totally in my mind, although they do make me wonder what on earth I'm taking.

Yesterday I was reading a memoir of a neurosurgeon, and I read that the brain really does sway gently in a sea of brain fluid of some sort as we go about our daily activities.

Is it possible that that weird side effect isn't totally all in my mind? That it might be in my brain instead? And if so, what on earth am I taking? Why would I feel those odd sensations?

No idea. Could it be inner ear problems? Just a thought? Phillipa

It well could be a med induced thing, unless it has just happened recently. I sometimes get strange zingers when I move my eyes quickly from side to side. It seems to happen more when my anxiety is high. Yeah, sometimes I wonder too what these meds are really doing to our gray matter!

I think it's definitely medication induced, based on timing. Lately it's been accompanied by ringing ears.

Of course, I'm also getting tinnitus when I'm anxious or overstimulated lately. It's driving me nuts.

It can feel different at different times. Sometimes it feels a little bit like being on a boat. But the most common thing is for it to feel that my brain is lagging behind the rest of me about half a beat. Like if I turn my head, it'll feel like my brain turns an echo later.

I just wondered if there was some truth in the sensations. Probably not.

I can't remember if it was hangover or what, but that is an exact statement of how it was for me.

Well, dang. If my meds are going to make me feel like I have a hangover, they could at least make me feel good along the way. :)

I'm glad to know that even if it's in my brain, it's not just in my brain.

Hmmm... hungover. Let me think about that. Maybe I can find some common element.

It might have been the after effect of morphine.

Morphine is never used in cases of head injury.

Whether it makes your brain get all swolled up, I'm not sure :)

Maybe that is the common element?

Could Risperdal do that?

I have checked to see if it correlates with Risperdal. But I haven't found any link. I hardly ever take Risperdal. I think I use maybe one refill a year. That makes it easy to check things against that medication.

Maybe I'll check to see if I may be dehydrated when it happens. I'm very bad about drinking the amount of fluids per day that I should. That would be common with a hangover, I think?
