My Pdoc says 60mgs. and under are stimulating, above that and it becomes more sedating. I take it with great success for TR Depression (60mgs.) and it worked for me on about day 4 or 5. Good luck.

is this "aggitation" part of it being stimulating or is it just a side effect that will go away after a while?

thanks and fingers crossed it works for me. i think i'll see how i do this weekend. and report to my pdoc on next tuesday. instead of bugging him today. this makes me feel better.
with the zyprexa it worked practically overnight. now i know to give this a little more time.
thanks IATW.

I think you can take up to 120mg but that is high. Did you google it? I'd think it would work as quickly as zyprexa. Why does zyprexa work so fast? Love Phillipa hope it kicks in for you soon and you have a great weekend. Phillipa

I think that is a fair statement for most people. I, myself derived benefit from 40mg. A friend of mine had to go up to 80mg to see maximal results for depression.

i was actually thinking it was 160mg max but not 100% sure on that. i remembered doubling the doses. 40, 80, 160.
i googled a little but kept getting same drivel, not much helpful infomation. maybe on wrong sites.

as for its quickness?? you got me...
maybe it is just me that zyprexa worked so quickly for. but it would always see to start to have effect immediately. if i was REALLY bad off it of course would take longer to get me back to normal but it's effect was very quick.

i can't seem to say the same about this drug. although i can't fairly compare the two. or at least i shouldn't. since i'm used to a calming effect and this one won't give that until higher doses.
i hope it kicks in soon too. thanks P.

about this tick that showed up this morning?
like i said earlier i usually get ticks in my face (eyes, lips) when i'm aggitated. but i have had it since i first posted...about 9am? and it's 12:30 now.
ok, so i'm hyperparanoid.
but what do i look for, normal facial tick vs. TD? is TD way different? are they larger movements?
constant?

cuz this comes and goes.

should i call pdoc immediately? or is it ok to go the weekened and wait till next tuesday before i say anything. (that's my plan)

and yes i'm just a bit over worried about this stuff so please put my mind at ease if you can.

Tardive Dyskinisia does not occur until you have been taking a neuroleptic for months or years. It is unlikely that you are experiencing this. I don't know whether or not your facial tics are an exacerbation of your previous underlying tic condition that may have resulted from the anxiety state that Geodon can sometimes produce early in treatment. I would call your doctor to see if he is of the same opinion. However, I would not worry about TD at this juncture. I would expect to see the tics diminish in a week or so.

TD presents as involuntary movements of the neck, head, lips, and tongue. However, tics around the eye can occur also. Your reaction might be a genuine acute (not tardive) EPS movement as a side effect. Even this should be a quickly passing phenomenon.

OMG
Scott, THANK you SO much for explaining TD to me.
i have been SO worried about this, probably that worry alone has brought this on.

i feel So much better that someone has explained this too me. i think it was like an animal in the room that i didn't know what he looked like and i was imagining all sorts of things. i did a little reading but i guess it either didn't explain it like i needed it, or i just wasn't paying attention.
your explanation was very clear and very helpful.
THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH.

IT IS NOT TARDIVE DYSKINESIA IF IT OCCURS IMMEDIATELY UPON STARTING TREATMENT.

However, I appreciate your concern. Whether or not orbital tics are a prelude to tardive dyskinesia is a good question. There is some debate as to whether or not acute EPS occurring early in treatment is a prognosticator of TD. However, if the tics disappear quickly, I am under the impression that they are not a prelude to TD.

Personally, I think the tics experienced by B2chica are a manifestation of the temporary anxiety produced by Geodon making an unrelated underlying problem worse. I would counsel B2chica to report the tics to the doctor; including a description of the condition occurring previous to the start of Geodon treatment.

It is obvious that you feel it has affected your eyes. However, the majority of people taking Geodon DO NOT experience this.

I'm not sure it is productive to generalize your interpretation of your experience to everyone else.

Jeroen, I sympathise with your distress -- I am really sensitive to certain medications and I have not blephorospams but an -ORAL- tic disorder. It was studied by a panel of neurologists and determined to be not tardive.

I also have potential TDy in my lower and upper trunk muscles from Zyprexa after one months use but there was stiffness (in the end) while using it in the first place, covered up by Amantadine and various other things, which is used for EPS.

It was my choice to switch because Seroquel was becoming uncomfortable for various reasons. I have to go past it and I do express anger my doctor and the world at times -- its natural. I understand.

But what can you do? This is what we have in 2008. The Seroquel has recovered (its one of many palleatives -- dystonia has more palleatives) up most of the TDy, if that is what it is. Some sort of dystonia. AGAIN, I am extremely sensitive to most all neuroleptics but I eat some antidepressants and other compounds (high metabolizer) for lunch.

The oral tic is almost entirely psychologically stimulated, it is uncomfortable and I can understand because it has undermined my confidence level which needs to be up there.

That all being said --- we're not comparing apples and bananas here, but I do have to emerge again with a life. I still take Seroquel because I have to for catch-22 reasons, it organizes my thoughts -- this though for me is not a psychotic disorder, its a very complicated somatiform condition..

But I wanted to reference again what is currently considered the risks for TD from typicals and atypicals, which I did a while back and my doctor basically believes the same thing. Doesn't mean I'm not still fatalistic or concerned about taking the medication.

http://www.leeheymd.com/medmemo/fall04.html

Basically Seroquel/Zyprexa are about 0.1% per year to an unknown range over life under 5% and the SAME can be said for Geodon, 0.5% because it admittedly is a stronger medication.

There have only reliably been reports of TD from monotherapy on Risperdal at least from what I've heard. It is much more powerful and I would not recommend it as much especially at high doses, but again, I have an affective disorder, not a schizophreniform disorder which means I'm more sensitive.

I hope this helps.

Also forgot to include, what SLS was mentioning, is the individual is experiencing ID, or initial dyskinesia. That is a common thing seen especially with strong antipsychotics just after first use.

TD is not even considered TD until after 6 (or is 9 -- I think 6) months of observation. Choreiform movements can be part of a disorder itself. But I will say that doctors and patients should have established periodic AIMS exams to determine what is going on. They take little time and are subjective.

WD, withdrawal dyskinesia, also is not TD. Its caused usually by dropping an antipsychotic too fast or a lead brick. Dont. I have. It basically completely resolves itself after an unknown but fairly short amount of time.

For me, Geodon worked within a couple of days. Almost overnight actually. I started at 20mg at bedtime and within a day or two, my depression and my anxiety were gone. Well, I still had a little anxiety - had to take .5 Klonopin in the afternoons. But it worked great for me for several months. I would have to increase the dosage every 2-3 weeks because it would start to poop out. So I'd go up by 20mg and I'd be all happy again. Finally I reached the point where I was taking 120 mg and I couldn't handle it. Too much norepinephrine action. I felt like I was going to jump out of my skin.

Right now I take 80 mg. I can't take it once a day or even twice as recommended. I take 20mg in the morning, 20mg in the afternoon and 40mg at bedtime.

It is very very obvious when I miss my afternoon dose - if I forget to take it or something. About 6 or 7 hours after missing a dose, I start to feel very depressed. Don't understand why it works this way for me but it does.

Hope this info is a little bit helpful.

Marsha

Hi Marsha.

You might want to try adding Deplin.

I know someone who is doing much better since adding Geodon to her treatment with Wellbutrin and Lexapro. She is stable at 80mg.

my dear Jeroen
you are the reason i've been so worried about TD with this medication. i remember the video you showed us long ago of your eyes.
i remember friend and can't forget.
i am sorry you have been affected this was from this and or other medications.

However, i've been determined to give this drug a try as abilify i'm sure would have been just too stimulating. so i was on super alert. maybe too much so with this drug.

that and other stressors gave me what infact turned out to be just a regular facial tic. of what ive gotten a hundred times before from stress. the tic itself ended before the day did and hasn't been back.

i do very much appreciate your concern. but please don't tell me i'll be hanging myself shortly. as i'm still highly susceptible to influential suggestions. even though i know you meant because you thought a person would rather be dead than deal with ramifications of a bad outcome from medications. i see it a another lure to suicide. and if nothing else a start to suicidal ideation. and i'm still fighting both right now. PLEASE dont do that.

thank you again for your concern.
and i hope things are better for you now.
b2c.

Hi THANKS again.
just wanted to tell you. ya it was just me being hypersensetive and all freaked out. it was just a normal twitch that went away before the day ended.

i'm feeling more stable but not great yet. the side effects/aggitation is gone but i'm still a little down.

thanks again so much for calming my freak @ss!
