what's the most expensive sleeping pill out there?

Posted by llurpsienoodle on April 4, 2008, at 21:13:06

I take sonata 10mg, which does the trick.

I was taking .5mg klonopin @bedtime for a long time, but I stopped that about 3 days ago.

perhaps I shouldn't have discontinued my benzo so quickly, what with starting on bupropion and all that. Apparently I'm at increased risk of seizure.

reckless llurpsie!

h takes generic zolpidem tartrate and has no copay, but I pay a little more than 20 bucks a month. I figure we're both getting a good deal.

Who pays lots for sleepieszzzzz?

happy nappy,
ll

Lurpsienoodle or doodle I stick with the valium and lately have added some xanax as thyroid is wild and wacky. Used to take lunesta too and have to pay out of pocket for them all as on mediciare and they don't cover these types of meds. I think a month of lunesta was like $70?? and the valium and xanax are a bargain at under $20 each a month. Did your pdoc say to go off the klonopin or mention seizures to you? And are you on a high dose or have history of seizures? Love Phillipa

im suprised you can even notice .5 klonopin over any amount of time especially a sleep inducing effect from it. By comparison thats like 5mg valium or half a mg of xanax.

I think ambien at one point was around $5 a pill before the generic.

**lunesta sounds expensive

>Did your pdoc say to go off the klonopin or mention seizures to you?

**no and no, but it was my understanding that the klonopin was always prn. From my post about wellbutrin above, I am finding that I have much less anxiety (thank GOD). History of seizures, nope.

**I was probably taking 1mg/day split into .5/.5 or .25/.25/.5

happy weekend,

**Unfortunately I had to take .25 klonopin and 20mg sonata last night. My mind was SO busy. (racing thoughts. ugh) And I fell asleep promptly.

**I have xanax too, and I could never take it, because it knocks me flat (even in the middle of the day) and I have to nap for 4 hours on 1mg. I keep it around though, because sometimes I feel the need to nap for 4 hours.

**that adds up! I remember those days, when h would have to make an Rx last months and months...

**pdoc last Rx me 3mg/day of klonopin. I actually took that dose for a week, but the sedation was just too much. I think maybe sigismund & T were right and the pill that was supposed to help anxiety was actually increasing a feeling of dread and powerlessness --> depressive feelings--> depressive reactions --> depression.

GABA. Glutamate. yummy

Just paid a copay of $4.50 for 30 Zolpidem, but I cannot take the generic Ambien, the doc forgot to write dispense as written on the prescription. They want a copay of almost $2 a pill for the name brand! And some nights I still can't fall asleep.

Li, stopping any benzo abruptly can cause seizures, especially clonazepam because it's indicated for use in some epilepsy patients when other meds don't work.

That said, did you know that wellbutrin alone can actually increase the risk of seizures in a small amount of people?????

I mentioned mogadon (nitrazepam) to you quite a few months back. I personally find it to be the best sleeping pill on the market and it's dirt cheap. I have tried nearly all of them except lunesta and sonata because they're not available here. I know that mogadon is available in your country but not the US.

Good luck and be careful, take care hon!!!! C

If benzos are so effective for you as far as sleep im suprised your doctor hasnt tried halcion. Its incredibly cheap compared to the next generation sleep aids. I think i paid $4.50 without insurance for 30 of them.

I found Halcion great for knocking me out but because of it's extremely short half life (2hrs), I kept waking up during the night and would have to pop another. Sometimes up to 3-4 times a night. It's a great drug for people who have trouble falling asleep but for people like me who wake frequently, it wasn't a great option. If you have trouble falling asleep and don't wake easily, it's great, much better than temazepam even though temazepam has a longer half life than halcion. I don't know why that is for me. I need a longer acting hypnotic as I mentioned in an above post

Sorry for that...it's just how I am these days. Things are either funny or else "the end of the world"...Fcuk - am I bipolar now too????

OK - the most expensive sleeping pill I ever took was probably Rohypnol / flunitrazepam. It was also a sure-fire knockout pill.

Nowadays I believe they're not so often prescribed, at least not here. Some people apparently use them in bars to spike someone's drink. It's become a date-rape accessory. They really knock you out though...!

Do they still prescribe that for outpatients? I thought that it was no longer used because so many people (i.e. Marilyn Monroe) killed themselves with it. Apparently that stuff is pretty lethal in pretty small quantities.

it's very hard to get rx'ed for rohypnol (flunitrazepam) here but to honest mogadon (nitrazepam) is just as effective and closely related

Nice to meet U2.

The Rohypnol...well......I started having probs getting to sleep when I was a teenager in the early 1980's. So I went to the local doc & one by one he tried me on various sleeping tabs. Once I realized he was basically a drug dealer, I began to manipulate the situation. I wanted to try as many drugs as I could for the short period of time someone with an attitude like mine was destined to be on this planet, ie not that long I thought. I was very Doors then: "Gonna get my kicks before the whole sh*t-house goes up in flames, Alright, Alright, Alright...."

So I kept telling him "No, that one didn't work"...or some such b*llsh*t & he was so gullible too. I mean, how good a liar could I have been to have gone through every benzo there was at the time + those lovely red chloral hydrate that Phillipa seems to like..?

They gave me a bit of a hangover as I recall. And yes, I think they're not recommended anymore on account of them being a good way to knock yourself off.

Want to hear something funny? I remember my parents fighting when I was a kid & sometimes when they'd finish they'd both have a few mls of "Bitone & Phenobarb" - which they told me was a vitamin tonic. Hilarious. I only realized when I was a teenager what they had been taking all those years.... ;)

Unfortunately, prescribing barbiturates was well out of fashion by the time I got interested. I am of the benzo-generation. I used to get temazepam in liquid gel caps which I think are off-market now too as they are often injected. I shoved a lot of crap up my veins but I'd never inject something thick as that goo was inside....(!).

So although it seems ridiculous now, there was my local doc prescribing Rohypnol to a teenager...! I remember they used to cost me 50c each - which was a lot out of my allowance... ;)

What else.....Hmmm...oh yeah. I'd heard about something called "major tranquilizers". How great must they be compared to my "minor" ones, I thought....? So I started to tell the doc stuff to make him prescribe them. I basically read all the Carlos Castenada books, so I had plenty of material to work with. Sure enough, he gave me Melleril (thioridazine) and Stelazine (trifluoperazine) and a couple of others. I worked out pretty soon that these weren't the party drugs I had expected. Made me into a zombie as I recall.

I also got bored one day & took 1/2 the bottle of Stelazine and had an "idiosyncratic reaction". My torso started to go stiff and I couldn't bring my head down. All I could do was stare at the ceiling. I thought "Sh*t....I might stop breathing next". So I left my bedroom & told my parents to ring an ambulance. They gave me Valium at the hospital. At least it took the edge off the awkward drive home.... :)

And oh yeah, they did affect my memory. I could take 10 oxazepam & 10 diazepam & a few slugs of some horrible alcohol - and don't let anyone tell you drugs & alcohol don't mix. Jesus...! I'd be awake & lucid-ish but unable to recall much of what I'd done / said the next day.

Recently I heard from a friend I had at the time how pissed he was at me during those years because we'd talk about something important at night & the next day I didn't know what the hell he was on about. Hmm.......

As I progressed to injecting methamphetamine and heroin & LSD - not together mind you, I found out that Rohypnol was the only thing that helped coming down off the methamphetamine. It really took the edge off the cranky ergly coming down phase.

OK - enough...! Thanks for listening to tonight's broadcast.... ;)

RANT=OFF.

Almost.....OK I have a small complaint about Dr Bob's site.

Q. How come all the good words get ***'d out. Like f*ck & sh*t, etc. Without the bright colors, I can't paint the right picture.

And although I've visited the USA several times, I never could understand how come they were so polite & would put ***'s in to fix up the "f*ck" words, etc. How come a genuine documentary on childbirth gets the vagina all blurred-out on TV. And yet, it's ok to rent horror movies with intense violence and to be able to buy guns as easily as bread & milk. I'm not criticizing - really. I've never met an American I didn't like...! I just don't understand how the apparent prudishness works in with the violence & weapons availability.

Now I've done it...! I've gone & started a holy war I bet. Remember - I said I like Americans..!!!

One more try > SET RANT=OFF
> ahh......

Well when first started nursing in 85 all the geniatric patients got a red or was it green I think pill. But mine was liquid and red. I had a pdoc that loved and gave up to 20cc's along with xanax. Didn't know that about Marilyn Monroe thought it was a whole bunch of different drugs???? Haven't taken it in over four years. Phillipa
