TCA's for anxiety

Posted by johnj on February 28, 2008, at 16:39:27

Which ones have worked and at what doses? Has anyone had good luck with lower doses than used for depression. Sleep issues continue to haunt me. I am on nothing right now and my therapist thinks I can do it without but today was not a good day and I was barely functional at work. How much longer can I take this before my body gives out? Frustrated.....again.

Elavil works well for anxiety and sleep and depression. I only needed a small dose of 10 mg. The worst thing about this med is that you will feel drowsy if you take too high of a dose.

Good luck.

Do you have bad side effects? I sometimes think that I have done something to deserve this. Today was really bad. I hate my job and I sat there having all this anxiety not knowing what to do. This will never improve it just gets worse as we get older. The anxiety is making me depressed.

The TCAs never helped me with anxiety. Nortriptyline made it much worse. Elavil caused me to fly into rages over nothing.

I did have success with imipraminine back in the 80's. The side effects were pretty bad but bearable. I didn't have anxiety then, though, just depression.

Maybe a TCA plus an anxiolytic?

4 hours sleep, feel more alert??

I only slept 4 hours and went from room to room last night. But, my head is more clear today. What does this mean? I notice that sometimes when I dream too much I feel kind of depressed. My main symptom is anxiety though. Maybe I need a med that doesn't allow as much REM sleep? Any thoughts. I hope I crash tonight. I need 7 hours.

Hi John,

Sorry you had the insomnia last night. Probably your head is more clear because you never got into deep sleep-when I sleep very deeply, I notice I am more groggy in the morning. Maybe you feel clearer today because you didn't get enough sleep to get to the deep part.

You're lucky you only need 7 hours. I need 9 and would prefer 10. I've always needed more sleep than most people. If I'd gotten only 4 hours last night I wouldn't be functional today.

Side effects from the medication? Yes, elavil made me very tired ... so I slept well, but I was groggy during the day. I am sure the side effect would have disappeared eventually, but I wasn't patient.

Right my anxiety stopper is Seroquel, 200 mg. It doesn't sedate me, but it really helps my anxiety.

I hope you find something soon.

Maxime
