least 'dulling' anti-depressant

Posted by g_g_g_unit on February 18, 2008, at 5:33:28

i was wondering if, generally speaking, there was an anti-depressant that had a reputation for being the least mentally dulling? that's my primary concern, at least over the other major ones (sexual, weight gain, etc.)

wellbutrin. Sometimes Prozac, because it energizes, but still i have had many times where i feel dull. Maybe because its just bordem....not the medication.

A few: Tianeptine, wellbutrin (this one can be a little to moderately dulling, but not for everyone), exercise, meditation.

I took Prozac for a few years and, generally speaking, didn't find it was particularly 'dulling' in any way.

I would agree with Wellbutrin -- however it can alter sleep patterns with patients with anxiety disorders and make sleep rather difficult.

SSRIs aren't necessarily dulling although they can cause word finding issues -- the more activating ones like Prozac would probably be a choice on that nature as far as sedation

Mood additives especially Lamictal can be a good antidepressant in combination with other therapy and I don't believe it is particularly dulling.

Effexor? It should be less dulling than Prozac, due to the stronger action on the NE.

for me it was prozac, in fact it did the oppsosite of the other ssri's in terms of having a dulling effect, its refered to as an atypical ssri, ive never had less apathy or been able to think more clearly than the first time i was on prozac, and it really made a difference to me, i never knew at the time but its one of the strongest 5ht2c antagonists out there

I would definitely put Effexor in the "non dulling" category...! In fact, as my pdoc was titrating me up to a working dose for me, I used to get a lots of anxiety even with little 37.5mg jumps.

Now I'm on 600mg / day & I don't get anxiety with it. Albeit I am also on 225mg mirtazapine which "is" supposed to be a bit dulling - but mainly at the low end doses like 15mg, etc.
