Is topamax an effective mood stabilizer?

Posted by LlurpsieNoodle on January 25, 2008, at 18:31:11

trying to think of solutions to the current weight gain situation.

I take
.5mg klonopin
50mg zoloft
300mg lamictal
10mg abilify (probably the weight gain culprit)

thanks for your opinion.

Dx ptsd, mood lability, depressive tendencies and the occasional loss of rational thought.

I don't think it's the lamictal. Haven't heard of complaints about weight gain on abilify and zoloft is a very low dose. Love Phillipa

i personally didn't find topomax to be an effective mood stabilizer or to even have much of an appetite-suppressing effect. i can't remember the dose that i took, but it was at least as high as the recommended dose for bipolar. hope this helps, cb

I am not well experienced with mood stabilizers. Just a little. I have been reading a lot lately at psycheducation.org, where they shed a lot of light on new bipolar stuff. Anyway, somewhere in the reading topamax is not a good mood stabilizer. The ones touted as best were lithium, depakote, zyprexa, seroquel, lamictal maybe fish oil, and maybe abilify.

can I add topamax to my mood stabilizers?

taking 50mg zoloft
300mg lamictal
.5mg clonazepam
10mg abilify
and zyprexa prn (about 1x week)

and gaining 1lb a week.

I want to either QUIT what's making me fat, or add something to make me less fat. probably too much to ask...

Sorry to interrupt, but I'd consider combining medications an advanced medication issue, so I'd like to redirect this thread to the new Psycho-Babble Neurotransmitters board. Here's a link:
