Lost feeling in my left part of hand...

Posted by your#1fan on December 25, 2007, at 10:52:44

ok, something happened. I cannot hardly type. Its numb, i cant hardly feel it. I was on the computer for a while and i thought the "blood flow" got cut off.

It didnt. The nerve is not responding. Im typing with my right and part of my left hand. Its the pinky, and the one next to it on the left hand. Thw two fingers i cant feel. Scary......i mean did twist a nerve?

Will this go away? its numb!

Oh god, please dont let me have to be tested for it. Its alot of money.

But merry christmas today.

Hi fan and Merry Christmas to you we're home with sickness so glad to see you posted. Maybe you were typing too much and did cut the circulation off especially if you were at all tense. just a thought. Phillipa

I get what I call spontaneous bleeds in my hands, specifically my fingers. I will notice a swelling and tightening of the skin in my finger or hand, with some immediate discoloration, like a bruise. Sometimes its from slight trauma and other times for no reason at all.

Perhaps you did this with all your typing and a small blood vessel burst and caused some bleeding into the soft tissues of your finger. Is it discolored at all besides being swollen? If this is what happened it usually resolves within a few days, but the numbness is more confusing unless the swelling has pressed on a nerve.

I would use some ice to reduce the swelling and hopefully the numbness will dissipate. I wouldn't rush to a neuro until you give it a chance to resolve. But if you are convinced it is comething more serious, by all means you may want to see someone, even just your GP. I would wait a few days myself, but I'm a skeptic about doctors, especially with odd complaints.

Besides neurologists are impossible to get an appt with and they cost $$$ so unless you have it, take a few days and see what happens with ice to reduce the swelling. YOu may have to lay off the extreme typing or whatever you may be doing with your hands/fingers.

Your ulnar nerve is compressed, most likely in the elbow area. Numbness in your pinkie and ring fingers is the classic sign for this. I get it when I'm using my pda for too long and holding it too close to my eyes.

Is your left elbow bent when you are typing? If so, try to arrange your keyboard so that your arms are straighter, and that should take care of it. If the numbness persists even after you've let your arm rest with the elbow straight and arm relaxed, then you might have a more serious problem with that nerve.

Hope this helps,

gg

This happened to me a few years ago. I lift weights, and apparently I had pinched a nerve somewhere in my arm. It was a month before I could feel my pinky and ring finger again. So, don't stress out about it, I'm sure you will be ok eventually.

gardengirl was right my elbow was bent when i was typing! well it is still swollen but i have gain a bit feeling in it though last night's rest. But im typing still slower. But the good news i can feel the tips of my fingers on the pinky and the other on on the key board. Last night i only typed with one hand; ha!

I didnt have any discolaration in my hand it was just kindof....."puffed" on the left side. Its just right now still "stiff", and partly numb, well actaully its pretty numb.

If you type a lot you most likely developed carpal tunnel syndrome which eveyine gets sooner or later. But you will need some tests, maybe some hand exercises. If you want to try something less expensive try a good yoga place and/or accupunture. BUT you MUST rest you wrists a bit. Sometimes simple modification of body position to the computer and keyboard may be all it takes. Also if it's pinky and ring finger plus thumb it's a cervical problem which is helped with posture and stretching. REST!!!!

i think its going to be ok. Im sorry that happened at the gym. That is one place you dont want to pinch muscles and especialy a nerve.

Ill give it some time. But its still, i cant believe this did it by typing, maybe i slept wrong.

its feeling better, but it still puffed, and partly numb, but i can move it them better now. At first i couldnt move.

its still slow.

thanks.

You're right that carpal tunnel involves nerve compression in the wrist area; specifically the median nerve. However, the fingers involved are the thumb, index, middle, and sometimes inner side of the ring finger. The pinkie is not typically involved except in very severe cases. #1fan's symptoms sound more like compression of the ulnar nerve, which provides sensation to the pinkie and ring finger.

On the other hand, I think your recommendations are great, especially changing the arrangement of computer and keyboard to improve posture.

What meds are you on? MAOIs can do this. My hands often go numb when in a particular posture for a while, whether its typing, playing video games, using my phone typing TXTs & playing games, waking up after lying funny, etc. Never noticed the puffiness though. Nardil & Marplan seem to cause it. Might be blood pressure issues, or maybe B6 related? I'm not sure. A few other meds have caused it too - TCAs & bupropion.
