SSRI Weight Gain and Orlistat (Xenical and Alli)

Posted by James_Glasgow_UK on November 14, 2007, at 0:18:05

Hi

I have just started taking Seroxat/Paxil again after sometime and managed to lose all of the weight I gained on it. I was wondering if anyone on the board had any experience of short or longer term combination treatment with orlistat to lose the weight gain from an SSRI's or try and keep you from gaining it in the first place.

I am going to see my GP tomorrow and hoping he will be pro-active and let me try it knowing I will gain a lot of weight, however, I am not that hopeful as I am in the UK and not used unless you are already very overweight.

Has anyone had success with any other meds to reduce weight or keep themselves from gaining it while on an SSRI?

James

Everyone I know who has used Paxil gained weight.

The running joke is that Paxil should be called FATxil.

My advice would be to keep searching for a different AD.

Both Prozac and Lexapro did not cause me to gain weight.

Hope this helps!

Glucophage (metformin) seems to be helpful for me.
I can't figure out any other reason I've lost weight. Search for my post about it.

ECA stack (ephedrine, caffeine, and aspirin) works for me. Started binge eating after withdrawing from Effexor, and then even more on Remeron, and didn't stop when I got off it. Gained 30 lbs in 6 months. I've lost 10 of those pounds and 1.7% body fat in the month since I started taking it.

Ephedrine is a behind-the-counter drug in the US. I don't know what the laws are in the UK.

You could also try clenbuterol or nicotine gum. Neither of these are anorectics, but they help by increasing your basal metabolic rate.

Xenical only is useful if you are consuming large amounts of fat, as it blocks the digestive uptake of 30% of fat and as a result can have mm... toilet side effects to begin with.

Stimulants are not a good choice if you're using the SSRI for an anxiety disorder, it kind of defeats the purpose and getting addicted to nicotine gum sounds absurd. People have died of ephedra due to undiagnosed heart conditions. Be careful.

You don't get addicted to pure nicotine

Sensitization to nicotine requires the other alkaloids in tobacco tar (reversible MAOIs); rats do not self administer. Nicotine can reverse the withdrawal syndrome to tobacco, though. There is interest in nicotine patches as a treatment for depression & ADHD.

Also ephedra is not tested for weight loss and is of dubious safety; I would stay away from. Ephedrine however is: There's a number of studies on pubmed indicating its efficacy as a weight loss drug.

I suppose you could ask for a private prescription if he won't prescribe it for you on the NHS. 28 days supply would cost you around £50 to 55.

Hi Ed

I was going to do just that but decided on metformin instead. Boot qouted me £55 for a box of Xenical and you can get a packet of US Alli Caps 120 Refill Pack for £35. Apparently there is not much difference between studies done at 60mg TID and those done at 120mg TID.

Hi J

Metformin is a phenomenally widely used antidiabetic drug. It is certainly the most frequently prescribed antidiabetic in the UK. Serious side effects are rare but it does cause quite a lot of gastrointestinal disturbances! Metformin hasn't received anywhere near as much study as a weight loss drug compared with orlistat and is not licensed for this purpose. On the other hand, metformin is cheap and has a good safety record. A small starting dose and gradual dose increases are recommended to minimise GI adverse effects.

Good luck :)
