Hi J

Metformin is a phenomenally widely used antidiabetic drug. It is certainly the most frequently prescribed antidiabetic in the UK. Serious side effects are rare but it does cause quite a lot of gastrointestinal disturbances! Metformin hasn't received anywhere near as much study as a weight loss drug compared with orlistat and is not licensed for this purpose. On the other hand, metformin is cheap and has a good safety record. A small starting dose and gradual dose increases are recommended to minimise GI adverse effects.

Good luck :)
