i've been on many antianxiety medications, first it was, well actaully my first medication was lexapro. That didnt help at all, i went like a year on antidepressants, for anxiety! my doctor finally started using Clonazepam. After that Lorazepam (Ativan)
Then finally after just years of horrific wonderful anxiety, i was put on xanax.
The bad thing, but the good thing is it only lasts approx. 2 hours. For me exactly.
Ativan lasted 6-5 hours. Which was good but sometimes i didnt feel i need to be sedated after. Xanax is just a really quick acting anxiety ridder.
It has a sedative effect but sometimes, when things get on my mind and bother me until im almost fixing to DIE! i think i need Lithium. I havent talked with my pdoc in a while. Main thing, i never want to call my doctor a million times.
But xanax is good in a weight because, you know the timing of when its going to where off, quick.

Lithium doesn't help anxiety.
And for now the Xanax effect is strong, but once your body gets used to that dosage it won't. Then you have to increase and so on and so on.
You said you are bipolar, correct? Why aren't you on a mood stabiliser and why are you on Prozac which is a no-no for people with BP.
Have you tried Seroquel? A lot of people take it for anxiety.

i've been on prozac which has saved my life. Nothing else worked prozac has worked for me wonderfully.
Xanax usally i get the same effect everytime. I've taken it about a year now.
Prozac increases my activity in life.
I take Zyprexa. ok.......... it does help with anxiety. Maybe i will stay with it. Instead of lithium.

I know you have mentioned being bipolar before. Did you receive this diagnosis from a doctor?

You may be interested in the extented release version of Xanax... I dont know the name (Xanax XR? XL?) but I know it may be better for you.

Marty ever tried it I did this summer and didn't like it a bit. It seems not to let you sleep but doesn't relieve anxiety during the day. Even paid for brand. This pdoc here thought no more ad's. Phillipa

-- No, didn't tried it myself. In fact I didn't took any Xanax since 2002. I miss it sometimes. It's a great anxiety killer.

Hi, here is Dr. Bob's benzo equivalency chart, showing xanax has a half-life of 9-20 hrs., half-life being the time it takes for half of the med. to leave your system. So you either have an extremely fast metabolism, or have developed a tolerance to alprazolam.

I myself have been on xanax for over 20 years, and it still works super fine for me, thank the Lord!
I take .5 mg. in the a.m. around 7-8am, then the next dose I take around 2-3pm, .25mg., then at bedtime around .75 mg. So we are all different.I would say that it is still in your system as all the charts say so, but you must have a tolerance to the med which is unfortunate.

Just a bit, .25mg. and not every day. the good thing about it is that I can go up by .25mg. if I need it, or omit a dose. I believe that the wellbutrin, crazy as it sounds, helps me not to always need as much of the xanax. I usually take 1.50mg. to 1.75, and rarely take 2mg. I worked too hard tapering down from 3mg!
