Valium -- Tooth Extraction. . . connection?

Posted by DiscoPuppy on October 4, 2007, at 15:24:44

I am deathly afraid of the inevitable. Yes, I must get all of my wisdom teeth pulled. I've waited long enough (in my early 30s now), and thought I could get away with not having to do this, but recent X-rays revealed that the roots have a potential to dig into my nerves. Yikes!

My oral surgeon gave me two choices for this procedure. One WITH a valium drip and one WITHOUT. The cost is SIGNIFICANTLY different.

What is the function of a valium drip in this application? I am already prescribed Klonopin for my extreme anxiety thinking about this procedure. In your opinion, is it worth it to pay the extra to get the valium drip? I prefer not to be conscious during the procedure, but I also have to think about the practical $ide of things.

Any helpful information would be greatly appreciated!

What problems are you having with the wisdom teeth? Valium is dirt cheap, and so is the drip apparatus. How much extra are they charging for the Valium drip? They probably use larger doses of Valium during the procedure than you're taking in Klonopin, and taking it via the IV route makes a difference too, but I imagine an extra Klonopin or two would help if that's all you can afford.

There's a good $850.00 difference between the having the IV and no IV.

I was most curious about the application in which valium is used in this circumstance. Is it PURELY to reduce anxiety, or are there other effects (pain management, anesthetic, etc.) that valium produces?

Impacted means that it has surfaced, right? If that's the case, YES it is. I don't know if that's better than non-impacted or not.

I have recurring nightmares about a surgeon with a pair of pliers ripping a big chunk of my face out of my mouth.

Has anyone had a valium drip? Is it worth it? What does it feel like when you come out of it?

As you can tell, my anxiety is very obvious.

P.S. My 2mg Klonopin (1mg twice a day) is starting to poop out.

There's some good info on Wiki about Wisdom tooth removal, impaction etc: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wisdom_teeth#Treatment_controversy

Valium is used for relaxation, sedation and amnesia - so you forget all those nasty images of a surgeon with big pliers ripping chunks out of your mouth, and parting with all that hard-earned cash for the privilege.

If you're not sure you're getting the best advice from your dentist or oral surgeon, I would get a 2nd opinion on how to proceed. If your teeth are impacted you may need stitches... But cx with the doc. You should feel good about their approach.

Don't be afraid of wizdom teeth extraction. Some people get it bad, but for the majority it is not that bad a procedure.

Mine was inconvienent but otherwise managable.
