Could we find answers right here?? Please read...

Posted by Cheryl-Lynn on September 11, 2007, at 20:34:17

If we have members here who have dealt with drug resistant debilitating depression and severe anxiety disorders for years on end who finally hit the jackpot with their med cocktail and found relief, wouldn't it be interesting to know if there is a common link between the drugs that worked for them and others like them who had the same problems and also found relief? What if we found there's a particular drug that is a constant in all those who have found relief?
Is it possible to do our own little "study" here?

It seems to be highly individual.

I know but wouldn't it be something if we found that among those who got well, there was a particular med that was in each of their med cocktails at that time when it finally worked?

We need several people who got markedly better to post what med cocktail finally did it for them and then see if there's a common thread.

I agree that it seems to vary wildly, but am still curious - if you had(let's say) 100 people who'd had long term treatment resistant depression and who'd all finally gotten better, would a particular drug or class of drug (eg: MAOI) make the list more consistently than others. I still think it's possible (to a degree) to narrow down what drugs are more promising than others.
Just thinking' out loud.

The STAR*D study gives some information on this,
but I think TRD is even more idiosyncratic to the person on what meds work. Generally MAOI's seem the most effective AD's and TCA's seem to be better at more significant depressions. Dirty drugs often work better.

I suspect there are other things people do that help keep them in remission or find the meds that work for them.

Thanks sam, I notice many talking about Parnate and upon looking it up, saw it was an MAOI - I'm rather intrigued as I've been leaning in that direction anyway.

Cheryl-Lynn

I just started taking Selegiline (small dose) which is also an MAOI, and in addition to my other meds. I have felt an improvement already.

That's great to hear! How long has it been since you've felt good?

Well, I began to fall into a slow depression during the summer, but was more or less managing it until about 2 weeks ago, when I had a few triggers. And I couldn't pull out. This is the second day on Segeline, and I'm feeling even brighter - I had a headache the first day and that is gone today. It really pulled me out of my depression very quickly; and I needed that.
My pdoc said I should feel the effects immediately
and he was right.

Cheryl, I've dealt with drug resistent depression for most of my depression and the one thing that has been difficult for me is that when a drug is found and remission comes it tends to stay only for a short time. Then one or two of the drugs pop out. With a drug treatment resistent individual the key is to have an aggressive consistent good pdoc that stays on top of things and what helps me as well is to keep a daily journal and a mood chart. Good Luck and Happy Remission!!

I think I've finally got a good doctor - I do wish she'd stop trying to convince me to go into the hospital though. So far my depression hasn't lifted for 7 solid years, before that I'd had intermittent depression that was able to be controlled by the meds. Now nothing's working.
No doctors have tried triciclics (sp?) or MAOIs yet though, so all options haven't been exhausted yet.
Thanks for the support.

Your doc will let you go into the hospital to switch meds? Here you must be suicidal , homicidal, or psychotic really bad. What state are you in? I'm in NC. Phillipa

Here in CA your pdoc can put you in the hospital if you have depression or another mental illness if you just need a mental break. Provided you don't have an HMO insurance plan.

I thought you had to be a danger to yourself or others but she sure is pushing the issue despite my assurances that I'm not actively suicidal - I'm in Canada. At this point home is the only "safety zone" I have - I think being forced into the environment of a psychiatric unit would make me feel much worse. The thought scares me to death.

Seems my options at the moment are the psyche ward or stay home and if I choose to stay home, she's not comfortable (yet) with trying me on anything radically different medication (wise). She's a really good doctor - one of the best in our area with a waiting list of more than a year (it was a fluke I got in) to get a first appt with her and good psychiatrists in my area are scarce. I'm frustrated on this issue, but I really do feel lucky to be seeing her. I'll keep working on her....not givin' up yet.
