ELDEPRYL OR PARLODEL WITH RITALIN,ETC.

Posted by robroy on September 13, 2007, at 13:49:16

I AM BEING PRESCRIBED RITALIN LA BY PRIMARY CARE PHYSICIAN AND MAY BE CHANGED BACK TO ADDERALL. I HAVE BEEN HEARING THAT WELLBUTRIN DOES GO WELL AS A COMBO WITH ADHD STIMULANTS. I WAS WONDERING IF SELEGILINE(ELDEPRYL)OR BROMOCRIPTINE(PARLODEL)MAY MIX WELL WITH ADHD STIMULANTS? WITH THEIR VERY SHORT HALF LIFE,IT DOES SOUND EXCELLENT TO STABLILIZE THE EFFECTS FOR DOPAMINE ENHANCEMENT. IS WELLBUTRIN REALLY AN EXCELLENT COMBINATION ON CERTAIN PEOPLE FOR THIS PURPOSE?

Regardless of half-life, irreversible MAOIs inhibit MAO for much longer than they're actually circulating in the system. Up to 40 days in some reports.

Stimulant/MAOI combinations have been done but it's not something you should just jump into; it's potentially dangerous and requires care and research, and preferably working with a doctor as well.

PARLODEL AND ELDEPRYL INHIBIT ONLY MAO-B IN SMALLER DOSES AND DO NOT RESULT IN THE SAME DANGEROUS INTERACTIONS AND RISES IN BLOOD PRESSURE FROM MAO-B INHIBITION COMPARED TO MAO-A INHIBITION. IN DOSES GREATER THAN 15-30 WITH ELDEPRYL IT CAN INHIBIT MAO-A AND THE SAME WITH PARLODEL IN DOSES GREATER THAN 10-20 MG. DAILY.

I don't think there's a good body of evidence on exactly how dangerous eldepryl and other selective MAOis are in conjunction with stimulants. The default attitude seems to be to be very careful, though, because reactions to MAOis can be unpredictable. I would imagine that, as you suggest, it's certainly less dangerous than the unselective MAO inhibitors (at least at a low dose), but in my experience, doctors get very uncomfortable about the idea.
