Hey Link,
wondering what happened to ur foray into protein kinase inhibition.. http://large-group.org/babble/20030723/msgs/245266.html

I tried tamoxifen and had an interesting response to it.. I'm wondering what you thought of quercetin?? I need something to help with my mixed mania...

What was your responce to tamoxafin ?

A number of antimanic agents will supress PKC. Reducing the activity of PKC-epsilon in particular, will enhance the brains responce to GABA.

Quercetin does have a calming effect. It is a strong PKC inhibitor.

Quercetin is also a MAOI, and a COMT inhibitor, which may exaserbate some mania for some people.
I have thought of quercetin as almost like a mood stabilizer. It is active as an antidepressant in animal models of depression, it is neuroprotective.

I know that there are similar cellular effects of other flavanoids. I think a number of citrus bioflavanoids can reduce PKC activity.

Green tea also reduces PKC. I would speculate there to be a synergy between the PKC inibition, and the GABA effect of theanine. Also, green tea is an acetycholinsterase inhibitor, which can help mania for some people.

But, green tea is also a COMT inhibitor which may make some mania worse. Also theanine is a NMDA antagonist, which may agrevate some psychotic like states.

Hard to say what the net effect is.

I find green tea really helps take the edge off.

No, there's caffeine, but it's stimulating effect is generally cancelled out by the L-theanine, which is anxiolytic.

Sorry about hijaking a thread here, but saw the name of the poster (bipolarspectrum1) and here I was thinking, as a Babblelander old f*rt, that I was like the only one talking about this.

That'll teach me for staying away too long. Pleased to meet ya, fellow BSD'er!
