I've only been on parnate for about a week or so, and the diet hasn't been a problem at all. But I was just curious, and a bit concerned- since it takes weeks for the MAO inhibition to start, does that mean once it does, you have to be more careful with the diet restrictions? (i.e, more particular in what you eat, how much of it you eat, ect)
on another note, I've also been tolerating it very well at 10 mg 3 x a day. I pray to Jesus it helps with my depression. I also take klonopin 1-1.5 mg for anxiety.

Good luck with it!
Just a note. I've known of people taking Parnate for Social Phobia & when it starts to work they no longer needed the klonopin. Which can only be a good thing. So watch out for that one!

>I've never taken parnate. I took Nardil for several years. My advice: Do NOT screw around with the dietary restrictions. Aim for zero tyramine. You could easily have one or more small strokes and not notice any acute symptoms, other than perhaps a headache.
Some more advice: I had a lot of temptations to "try a little" or whatever. One day I was throwing out old books and came across and ancient copy of "I'm Okay, You're Okay", and the following thought popped into my head:
Trying to see how much I could bend the "rules" for taking an MAOI was the behavior of a child. But these aren't arbitrary rules. Tyramine, at some unknown dose, is going to be harmful to my body. The best thing I could do for myself was go into "parent" or at least "adult" mode concerning dietary and drug restrictions.

>I agree with the notion that the tyramine/food restrictions are not to be messed around with. I've been careful. My original question was, though: Since MAO inhibition takes a few weeks to truly start, do i have to be MORE careful after weeks/months of being on an MAOI, or is your tolerance of certain foods in small quanities (i.e , coffee, avocado, ect. the "moderation" list) going to be the same months from now as it has been the first couple days you started on it?

I'm ultra careful with the diet, except I never gave up my strong morning coffee..never noticed anything out of the ordinary after drinking it..

Same. I think it's not so much the coffee, but the caffeine, and that all depends on an individual reaction as far as I understand.

Technically, yes, blood levels of Nardil build up over time. I think I estimated about 10 days in my case, that is, I would get full effect of a certain dose after taking it for 10 days; I kept detailed records over a few months to try to determine dosage.
The backside -- period of time to elimination -- is a very tricky subject. Most authorities say to stop taking it two weeks before surgery (to avoid complications or mistakes with anesthesia) so that's a guideline.

> Same. I think it's not so much the coffee, but the caffeine, and that all depends on an individual reaction as far as I understand.I found caffein to have no dangerouse interactions with Nardil. And I used to BINGE on the stuff - maybe over a gram of caffein/day for several days sometimes.
Not sure what the implications would be with other MAOIs, especially Parnate.
One thing I did find is that using caffein for more than a day, for me, diminished Nardil's positive effects at least temporarily.
This is the end of the thread.
