Nembutal Sodium -- Injection

Posted by DStupid on July 9, 2007, at 20:45:53

My dad is slowly withdrawing from Xanax 4mg daily and is suffering from insomnia. In the 50s, he was taking Nembutal with good effects. It appears from the U.S. government site (http://www.accessdata.fda.gov/scripts/cder/drugsatfda/index.cfm?fuseaction=Search.Overview&DrugName=NEMBUTAL%20SODIUM) that Nembutal Sodium (pentobarbital sodium) is still manufactured in the U.S. by Ovation Pharmaceuticals.

Has anyone gone this route?

I don't think barbiturates are used very much. A doc might, I imagine, use a barbiturate as part of a benzo detox, but usually that'd be for an inpatient taper for people on high doses (or polydrug users), and even then I'm imagine they'd use phenobarbital. Why is your dad getting off the xanax? If he still needs an anti-anxiety drug, try to find him a doctor who is comfortable prescribing a benzo (they really are very safe, and very cheap). I think for older people Serax is suppsed to be a good option--minimal medication build-up, not too sedating (thus minimizing falls and cognitive impairment), and generally a "clean" tranquilizer. I would think that Valium and Ativan, and possibly xanax xr, would also be good options, but I'm not a doc so....

anyway, good luck.

In junior high they used barbituates but I'm on valium for years and that seems to work okay. Love Phillipa
