I don't think barbiturates are used very much. A doc might, I imagine, use a barbiturate as part of a benzo detox, but usually that'd be for an inpatient taper for people on high doses (or polydrug users), and even then I'm imagine they'd use phenobarbital. Why is your dad getting off the xanax? If he still needs an anti-anxiety drug, try to find him a doctor who is comfortable prescribing a benzo (they really are very safe, and very cheap). I think for older people Serax is suppsed to be a good option--minimal medication build-up, not too sedating (thus minimizing falls and cognitive impairment), and generally a "clean" tranquilizer. I would think that Valium and Ativan, and possibly xanax xr, would also be good options, but I'm not a doc so....
