Geodon for severe mood swings???

Posted by Colleen D. on June 14, 2007, at 20:04:06

I have not been dx'ed as Bipolar but my GP had me start Geodon yesterday. Today was a VERY GOOD day on it compared to the rage and irritability and anxiety I'm used to. But I've got myself thinking that I want something to help so badly that I've convinced myself it's actually working. After being in the mental health system for 7 years, could EVERYONE that I've seen have missed a BP dx???

Any Geodon experiences, good or bad? And what does this all mean? Can anyone help me understand the action of this drug?

I'm also taking Zoloft, Klonopin, doxepin and today started the new OTC med for weight loss - Alli. I'm tired of being crazy AND fat! I've got 28 lbs. yet to lose to get to my ideal weight. I've been on a strict exercise program for 2 months, which has helped with my depression immensely!

Thanks,
Colleen

Colleen,

I'm kind of borderline bipolar. I think I have it because I'm so moody. From the rage, irritability, and anxiety, it sounds to me like you have it. You can have it in degrees though - just a little or a lot. I had to ask for a mood stabilizer because I could tell I was overreacting to things and just so moody all the time. My NP gave me Geodon and it is helping quite a bit! I think it does work. I am taking 180 mg at bedtime and 40 mg prozac in the morning. I also take klonopin as needed.

I have more energy and motivation and am happier with less anxiety and definitely less moody. The only thing is mine wears off after 22 hrs, so around 8 pm every night, my mood goes down and I can feel it wear off. I might try asking for a dose increase next time I see the NP (nurse practitioner).

Has anyone had any weight gain from Geodon??? I've heard it's supposed to be weight neutral, but we all have such different effects from these meds. I have gained 5 pounds in the last month, but I also started the birth control pill at the same time and I know you can gain 5 pounds or so from that. Let me know if you gain any weight on it, cause if I gain weight, I'm switching to something else.

I took geodon for 2 years. It only worked at high doses, taken at 4 different times of day, because of very short half life, 7 hours. It made my vision blury at high doses, which went away once I stoped it. I did gain weight on it. About 30 lbs. Same speed as on zyprexa. I took abilify for a while and lost a lot of that wieght. Now I'm back on zyprexa, because its the only one that works well for me.

Has anyone been able to stay on Geodon long term as a mood stabilizer without getting any bad side effects????
