Questions to ask when interviewing new PDOC

Posted by jitterbug on June 4, 2007, at 18:28:23

In the future I may be relocating to Canada. I always HATE the process of finding a new pdoc. You never know if you're going to get a benzophobe, or someone who wants to rattle things up just to put their own fingerprint on your treatment.

I have Panic Disorder, OCD, and night terrors.
I take 15 MG of Valium daily (5 1/2 in the AM and 5 1/2 in the PM) along with my antidepressant. I'm stable, feel good, and no longer have night terrors (which were AWFUL I might add.)

What kind of questions should I ask when trying to establish a relationship with a new pdoc? The last thing I need is to be de-stabalized when I move to a new country (completely different environment, stress etc.) This combo WORKS for me. Anyone who has been through this please post your suggestions. Thanks.

I always ask questions about how they define success, how long they try meds for, what sorts of things they look for in making decisions about whether or not a med will work out, and what they do about side effects. Those are usually the most important for me.

The big one for me, is that I've had doctors in the past try to RAISE doses when I tell them that something isn't working, or that the side effects are too bothersome. Therefore, I ask a fair number of questions about that.

In your case, I guess it's probably best just to ask if they feel comfortable prescribing benzos... I would. Then again, all the doctors I've seen have been fine offering up benzos, so that might just be a regional thing here...

Good luck, both in finding a doctor and in your move.

Doesn't Canada have some law or something about seeing a pdoc in your Province and not a lot of choices. I don't live there but have heard others speak of this maybe someone from there will jump in. Love Phillipa

I would let the psychiatrist know what has worked for you, both biochemically and procedurally (starting on a low dose, avoiding certain side effects, not wanting to take too many things at once, wanting to try anything that works, etc.). I would also explain how you got to the regiminen that works for you now and ask him if he would have any trouble working with you in this way.

Good luck,
Johann

thats not true at all about canada. theyre not like a communist government. they have socialized medicine, but several employers also offer private insurance. if you choose to use the public health system then your options are smaller. if you have your own insurance you can see what ever doctor you want thats covered under your plan.

I would also ask about pdoc's after hrs/emergency availability. It is not possible to get in touch w/ my pdoc after hrs or on the weekend and that has been a real problem at times.

Best,
EE
