My solution re: tolerance to benzos for sleep

Posted by halcyondaze on February 20, 2007, at 15:55:03

I've been taking Halcion for about a month at 0.5 mg. I started to notice tolerance developing: at first, I'd have these early morning wakenings a couple of times a week and then the drug just stopped putting me to sleep so I'd have to take more of it.

My doctor and I came up with a solution: on the nights that I don't have to wake up early, I will take Ambien at 10 mg, and the other nights I will take Halcion at 0.5 mg. Since there's no cross-tolerance between Ambien and Halcion, this makes it a good combination by keeping my benzo tolerance low while still allowing for consistent sleep. So about four days out of the week I will be taking Halcion and I will be taking Ambien on the remaining three. I'll keep you all updated, but so far it seems to be working out.

Sounds like a plan -- there is crosstolerance though between any benzodiazepine and a pseudobenzodiazepine like Ambien. The two don't work quite in the same way but they do touch GABA-BZ. But alternating may affect that crosstolerance somewhat, so sounds good.

And a pleasant sleep

Perhaps you interrupted the continuity of sleep that Lunesta was providing. Alternately stopping and then starting a sleep aid or switching sleep aids can make for a few jerky bumpy nights. This is normal.

How long were you taking Lunestra? Zopliclone stopped working for me after a few weeks. You take Valium+Xanax for sleep?

A nightcap+Xanax i find = 1+1=3, potentiation i guess
