HELP! My cats might have eaten Parnate!

Posted by halcyondaze on January 27, 2007, at 0:29:03

I came home and found a red tablet crushed on the floor. I have no idea how it got there but Parnate is the only pill I take of that color. I couldn't find most of it, just the coating and some parts of the tablet and it's possible that one of my cats ate the rest. They are not behaving abnormally but should I take them to the pet emergency room just in case? Will this kill them? What about food interactions - should I monitor their diets for the next few days? HELP!

Why not at least call the vet's office? They can give you the scoop on whether or not Parnate might cause problems, and whether or not to bring them in.

I know this is going to sound trite given the circumstances, but: have you ever tried those "Pill Pocket" snacks for giving cats pills? I can't stand yanking their mouths open and shoving the pills in there, so I insert the pills in these pocket snacks and the cats wolf 'em right down. You vet probably has whatever brand is available around there, or can tell you where to get some.

I took the time to tell you this because if you do have to medicate them for the Parnate, you at least won't have the hassle of forcing the pills in their mouths to worry about.

Good luck with your friends,
Reggie BoStar

They probably wouldn't have eaten a whole pill with Parnate tasting so nasty. It probably wouldn't kill them at such a low dose, but they may have trouble sleeping tonight. Do they normally eat any tyramine rich foods? Maybe you should feed them on fresh meat and fish for the next two weeks to be on the safe side? How did they open the bottle?

There might be a delayed reaction. I would call the vet or take them in just in case.

I found this article

Thanks to all who responded. Every week, since I take so many pills, I put them in one of those carrying cases up high on my dresser. My sneaky cats pawed the case off of the dresser and the pills came out. I found all but one of them, until I found the coating and crushed pill under the bed last night. They were okay - they had a very small amount (if any). It just worries me more than any of my other meds because it's such a "serious" medication, one that you never hear about animals taking.

Glad to hear that your cats are allright. Maybe have to put some sort of pet repellant near where your medicine is (nothing terribly toxic).

There are dogs who have had OCD like behaviour stopped by SSRIs.
