May I ask how it's going with the Focalin XR?
I just began it today. I also take Klonopin.

It has been quite some time since I have been active on this board. I was affected by Katrina, and have just now been able to get active on the net again.

I was excited to see someone else takes such a simliar med combo to the one I take.

Hope to hear from you,
mell

hi Mell,

I am SO sorry to hear you were affected by Katrina. How are you doing?

I had been on Concerta for years and switched to focalin XR when my silly insurance threatened to stop covering Concerta. They've since put it back on the formulary as I suspect most people on it just switched to focalin, which is more expensive LOL

anyway, it's been ok. I've been going through a particularly horrible experience myself in dealing with the outside world and things not being in my control. There are two threads (one was moved to "work" the other to "alternative" which have chronicled by Kafkaesque nightmare - if you're interested, you could probably find them. They're not necessarily relevant to your post though it has certainly made my depression spiral badly out of control and I've wondered if the focalin was still working as well.

I've pretty much decided that it's doing fine - it does hit harder first thing in the morning than the Concerta did and I changed some of my morning supplements to accomodate it and I never noticed a hard crash that initailly concerned me... just the usual spaciness and ADD stuff which make me pretty useless in the evenings

personally I think an ADD med with klonopin works really well.

I've 'heard' of klonopin adding to depression but I don't think I've experienced that. I don't even feel the klonopin - that's why I like it - it seems to work 'under current' to quell anxiety and helps me sleep

I know Stargazer also asked you, but are you taking the focalin for ADD? Do you also take any AD's and if so, what are you using? I've been on wellbutrin & buspar, which I'm fairly sure may no longer be effective - it's hard to tell. I've also been on a low dose of hydrocodone, which is an extremely good AD for me... though it's the reason for my battle with "big brother" and I'm about to be forced off it. I've already tapered my dose down to half and there's another reason for the additional depression.

how much focalin and klonopin are you on? I'm taking 40mg of focalin xr in the morning with 1mg klonopin (also still take 15mg buspar but considering tapering off it) and then I usually take 1-1/2mg klonopin in the evenings with soy supplements and some stress stuff.. My afternoon regimen consists of 100mg wellbutrin & 15mg buspar (both of which I'm hoping to ditch) along with some cognitive and motivation supplements - supposedly helps with memory etc and which I 'hope' helps keep the focalin going

I'm big on supplements! LOL In my morning vitamins, there's also 1000mg magnesium, which I initially took to help with medication constipation but have since learned is supposed to be excellent for ADD, anxiety & depression... though I can't say whether they help those things or not

well, I've more than likely given you more info that you possibly asked for LOL and even asked more questions than answered... but I hope I have been of SOME help

it's always good to find someone taking some of the same meds... btw, have you been on ADD meds before and if so, what have you tried?

please keep me updated on your progress

good luck and welcome back!!

lilith

Hi....The focalin XR is working really well for me. I am currently taking 20mg in the morning followed by 10mg of methylphinadate at 3:00pm and again at 6:00pm. Also I might mention that I take 75 mg. of effexor XR in the morning. This combination seems to be working real well for me. My Doctor did up the focalin XR to 30 mg a day hear a while back with only one of the 10 mg of methylphinadate in the evening but I didn't like the effects of that combination at all. It made me feel nervous and "geeky" if you know what I mean.
I hope the focalin XR works as well for you as if has me.
Also sorry to hear that you were effected by Katrina. I am sure that has created some very trying times. Keep the faith....Life is good.
Take care.

have you had any sleep difficulties taking the methyphenidate so late in the day?

I'm pretty sure I tried taking effexor at one time with my stims and think it worked fairly well. I just couldn't tolerate the side effects of effexor. I had immediate anaorgasmia and lived in terror of weight gain LOL

I've also wondered about supplementing the focalin with something later in the day but I'm looking into EMSAM as well

that you can say 'life is good' speaks volumes... good luck on holding that thought. I hope it lasts forever for you!!!! :)

Thanks for the information and for your support. I am on 20mg of the Focalin XR each morning. Today is my second day. So far, so good. I'm staying hopeful! Mostly I want to be able to focus better at work. I have BPII and ADD.

The last year and a half since Katrina has been very challenging. I'm trying to do the best I can. I'm so glad my pdoc is still in town. Many, many doctors have moved away. Thanks for your encouragement. It helps!

Thanks for your responses to my post on both threads. I'll respond to both here in one post to make it easier. Sorry if this seems disjointed at all, but I want to be sure to cover everything. :-)

Katrina has been a challenge. I am so glad that my pdoc came back after the storm. Lots of doctors have moved away. I'm doing the best I can, and so far I think things are going as well as can be expected. I got off (took myself off) all my meds for awhile the storm, but in retrospect, that probably wasn't the smartest idea I ever had. I have had spikes in my depression lately that have been very situational in nature, related to living here in a post-Katrina world.

I read the threads you mentioned regarding the extreme difficulties you've been facing. I hope that things take turns for the better soon. That is alot of stress to be dealing with. I will keep you in my thoughts & try to send good energy your way.

I'm currently taking 1/2mg Klonopin and 20mg FXR in the morning. I like taking those together. I think they work well together. In the early evening I take another 1/2mg Klonopin (or even just half of that amount if I'm not feeling anxious or wired). My doctor gives me lots of leeway to decide how to regulate my Klonopin dosage. I also take a calcium/magnesium supplement in the evening.

My diagnoses are BPII & ADD. Technically its BPII that she puts on the paperwork, but I have lots of ADD syptoms, ever since childhood. I responded good to Adderall, but had SE trouble - It made me dizzy. That's the only other ADD med I've tried. I have been on several AD's & other meds, but none right now. I have been on Lamictal on & off. It's a good med for me, but I feel so bloated on it that I can't make myself stick with it. Weight gain is my worst fear with meds. I was on Wellbutrin for awhile, but had very awful constipation with that. Though it was a beneficial med from what I remember.

Your letter was of great help. I so appreciate your taking the time to write.

Already at work, I feel like I have more healthy energy, focus, alertness, and motivation. It's like my head is clearer. Also, I got up out of bed and got ready for work so much easier than my usual struggle. I hope it's the med that helping me! I know it's too soon to know for sure, but I am hoping!

Thank you so much for your response and for taking the time to read up on my woes... particularly in light of your own.

I also hope I am not too disjointed as I feel like my writing's all over the place at the moment. I haven't been able to accomplish anything today - just one more lost day in a terrible string of them and I suspect that makes me more prone to writing a LOT once someone actually communicates with me.

currently ALL I do is sit and rock - wait AND dread for the damn hearing to take place and have it over with! It's next week and I grow more anxious by the day. I also have to travel a few hundred miles to get there.

I agree about liking the focalin with klonopin and it looks like our ratios are pretty similar - I'm just on a higher dosage :)

if the wellbutrin helped, you might consider trying it again by taking additional magnesium in the morning. It really helps medication induced constipation for me. And I understand your going off your meds. I'm sure at the time, it made sense and it's easy to look back. Considering the circumstances, I might have done the same thing. Not having access to your pdoc must have been difficult

My own therapist has been spending most of his time in LA since Katrina and it's taken his practice into a whole new arena. I'm thrilled for him and so pleased he's been able to help but have missed having the support. On the other hand, there is that part of me that feels things 'sometimes' (only sometimes - other things I simply cannot fathom - like Katrina or my current situation) happen for a reason and that being on my own may be one of them. Yes, I have fallen apart but I probably would have with him around anyway. It was he who had offered me the possible lead to working with Katrina survivors once I was licensed and LA has good reciprocity laws with florida (where I live) No one expected the state to do this to me and I'm sorry I haven't been able to be of any help during this crisis. It has been frustrating beyond belief and it has also taken me so far away from my endeavors, I'm not sure I'll be able to practice, regardless of the outcome of my hearing.

Like you I have a terrible fear of weight gain side effects. And as I've tried so many AD's over the years, I've discovered that too often the side effects out weigh any possible good the drug might do. I'm at a loss right now. My own pdoc (as you read) wents nuts when my situation challenged his right to subscribe what he wants for me. In some twisted way, he seems to have blamed me (depsite the fact that it was HE who told me not to worry when I was filling out my paperwork - he said "they're not allowed to discriminate against you for being on medication" and boy was he wrong about that!!) and his subsequent letter is a reckless and mis-informed rant that actually will endanger my case, if it comes to light, rather than help. It has also caused me to lose a tremendous amount of respect for him. I can 'challenge' his report, if necessary but all that does is discredit him... it won't undo the damage his acting out might cause me.

at any rate, I'm going to need to find another pdoc as I certainly don't want to continue working with this guy. And that's just more stress thatn I can deal with right now

I do apologize for this rambling.. I guess I'm in worse shape today than I even realized.

I hold you in my heart as well and hope that everything continues to improve for you. :)

good luck!

namaste,
lilith

hi there...

It's been great finding so many of us using this combo.

20mg focalin XR with 2mg klonopin? Are you taking anything else later in the day? You say you wake up groggy... are you using anything to help you sleep?

if I may make a suggestion, you may want to keep the focalin and klonopin next to the bed with a glass of water. This way you wake up and take them before even leaving the bed. The focalin works so quickly, you'll be awake in no time :) I keep my meds all 'ready' in one of those week's worth pill cases.

It also helps me make sure I take them as I try to wait a little these days. The couple of times I did forget, I was able to check the pill case to be sure. Of course, by then I was such a mess, it wasn't hard to figure out. but it also helps keep you from potentially taking it twice accidently. LOL At least you can check the day

good luck!

hi Mell

you have no idea how much your words mean to me. I never thought I'd find myself in this condition... like you, I have absolutely NO tolerance for situations such as these - it pushes ALL my buttons and I haven't handled it well at all

now that it's getting down to the wire, I seem to be really falling apart, though I know I'll need to find my center and go into that damn hearing in a 'good' place or I'm sunk... even though I 'may' be sunk before I even enter the room. I haven't a clue if anyone contacted my pdoc... if they did, it's going to be a mess!!

and of course, I'm not sure if I want to even bring him up, unless I have to... as I don't intend on seeing him again

yes, I will keep you posted - the hearing is next wed - jan 17th.

thanks again and good luck to you as well..

I hope you find relief with the focalin & klonopin.

hi theo

welcome aboard the focalin thread LOL

I take 1mg klonopin in the morning with 40mg focalin XR and 15mg buspar... then take 1-1/2 mg (used to be 2mg) in the evenings with soy and stress supplements.

I used to also take 1mg in the afternoon with my afternoon meds (100mg wellbutrin, 15mg buspar along with stress, focus and cognition supplements) but cut that one out as well. Now if I'm having a bad day, I'll take another 1mg, as needed. I do sometimes have some panic.

I'm currently considering tapering off the wellbutrin and buspar as I don't know if they're helping anymore but my circumstances are such a nightmare right now, it's hard to know what's affecting what

the interesting thing for me with the klonpoin is that, at least on the doses I take, I don't 'feel' it working and I like that.

hope this helps... what are you taking?

good luck

Theo,

Similar to what lilith said in her response, I really can't even tell I'm on the klonopin. What I CAN feel is when I'm not taking the klonopin. In other words, the klonopin frees me of those high anxiety/panicky/"rev'ed up" feelings.

I take FocalinXR 20mg in am (I'm on my 4th day) and I take .5mg of klonopin at the same time. If I need it, I take another (usually smaller) dose of klonopin at bedtime. If I'm really having a hard time, I will take klonopin mid-day as well.
Based on my experiences so far this week with the FocalinXR, I definitely do best to take the .5 klonopin along with it in the morning. It seems that those meds work really well together for me.

I take 40mg Focalin XR + 10mg buspar + 300mg provigil when I wake. then another 10 -20 mg Focalin IR at lunch, then 10mg buspar + 5-HTP + melatonin + fish oil tablets + acetyl -l carnetine + alpha lipoic acid + multivitamin at bedtime. Befor eprovigil tried wellbutrin which helped also. I am skeptical whether the supplements do anything but denude my bank account.

hi.. thanks for adding your input.

How do you like the provogil? Are you outside the US or do you have to order it from overseas. How do you think it stacks up against wellbutrin? I'm currently on both wellbutrin and buspar but have been considering weaning off.

I've been looking at EMSAM as a possibility along with my focalin & klonopin.. or maybe tianpetine.

But if you're having success on monafinil & buspar, I'd be curious about that combo as well

Obviously, I'm looking to switch out my AD meds.

I wouldn't worry about the extra expense of supplementation. What you're taking is good for you and you could always trial backing off one to see if there's a difference.

how long have you been on the focalin/modafinil/buspar combo?

thanks for sharing and good luck!

Befor eprovigil tried wellbutrin which helped also. I am skeptical whether the supplements do anything but denude my bank account.

focalin dosing, SE's

I've been on the 20mg Focalin XR about a week now. I have enough energy during the day, but on 2 or 3 of those days, I have become very sleepy at 8pm. Could this be focalin related? I'm really not sure. I suppose I should watch how things go over the next week or two, and that will help me to figure out if it's related or not. I'm wondering if others have had this happen and if that's why some people take a dose later in the day.

hi mell,

It sounds like the focalin is wearing off, except that you say it's only a couple of days a week. But I'm pretty useless in the evenings myself. How early are you taking it?

Since it's not happening daily... it 'could' mean something else is driving the fatigue, particularly you feel it's extreme.

Maybe consider food allergies? See if there's anything else you can see happening on those days... whether it's something you've eaten or drunk or even perhaps just been exposed to

sorry I couldn't be of more help

good luck!

This is why my Doctor gives me 10 mg. of methylphinadate later on in the evening. The 20 mg focalin wears off late afternoon to early evening....I take the focalin around 5:45 am then I take 10 mg of the other at 3:00pm and again at 6:00pm.(in case you are wondering...no, I have no trouble slepping).

My biggest concern is that with so much stuff its hard to know what is doing what. The buspar helps me with some "train track thinking in a rut" that the focalin creates. The Provigil reduces daytime sleepiness some of the time. I'm in the uS and for a time had used Adrafinil, which is much, much, cheaper.

I know what you mean.... there's probably a synergistic response from the combination.. after all, that's what makes a 'cocktail' work :)

I didn't think either modafinil or adrafinil was available in the US and they both appear to be fairly expensive ordering from overseas. Why did you switch from adrafinil to modafinil?
IS progovil now available here? have you found one to be more effiacious than the other??

if I could get it, I think it might be worth trying in place of the wellbutrin and then maybe keep the buspar. I've never really had any side effects from buspar, besides some headaches in the beginning. It doesn't seem to have any anxiolytic effects on me but it did seem to have some mild but apparant AD effect

money is a factor, unfortunately.. I came 'this' close to ordering some tianeptine yesterday but realize it will cost about another $100 a month PLUS I'd have to worry about it arriving. Then I keep reading such see-saw responses, I'm not sure if it's worth the try

I actually found some old adrafinil in a drawer the other day. Olmifon, from France. I haven't a clue when I got it and it looks like just a little over 1/2 the box was used (about 25 pills) I don't remember getting it, much less taking it and whether I even gave it a chance... looks like they're 300mg pills. Would it be worth trying? there's only 16 pills here

how long did it take you to feel something?

thanks for listening to my rambling... I'm a bit incoherent today - leaving for my hearing in a couple of hours and to be honest, I am scared. The actual hearing is tomorrow - I just get to make the 200 mile drive today so I'm there on time in the morning
