These doctors specialize in depressive disorders.

What about all the other psychiatric illnesses?

I am sure some of these doctors work in other areas, but just to make sure you might want to call a particular doctor's office and ask him or her if they treat your particular disorder, and if not if they could provide a reference.

Dr. Ivan Goldberg is usually very helpful and answers email: Psydoc@PsyCom.Net

Michael problem is most times you need a referral and they are not taking new patients and what if they don't take medicaire? Love Jan

I feel your pain, I've gotten the run around from some top pdocs. But I also did get to see a doc on one of those lists. You just got to be aggressive ... emails, calls, hand-written letters, prayers.

How does a pdoc end up on a top pdoc list anyway? I'm just curious. Is it because statistically they have many more patients that get well compared to other pdocs? Is it because they attend a lot of seminars and conferences? Is it because they do research and writings? They try off-label strategies a lot? They've had extensive post-graduate training? They can improve the most complicated cases that other pdocs couldn't?

I guess the bottle line in my opinion is that if they have a majority of patients get well in a short time with few trials and errors, that would be a top pdoc in my mind. All the other stuff doesn't matter.

I wonder how they got on that list?

Thats a good question. Could be who wrote the best books or did the most cited research.

Taking into account even the most basic personality profile of a psychiatrist, we know that the list includes doctors who agree with the author of the list.
That said, this doctor Ivan guy is supposed to be smart although he did jump on the Lamictal band wagon a year ago when everyone thought it was the magic drug -- do i have that right?
Anyway, I wrote him an email and will call him.
Will keep you posted.
I find many pdocs to exhibit cult-like behavior
I am first going to call my pdoc to see if he is willing to write the scripts for bringing in a med that will help me focus

Yes.

Networking among doctors helps the quality of life in patients who may not be seeing "the top doc", because of the trickle down theory. Meetings, journal (confidential anonymous notes) clubs, and other such things lead to better education of psychiatrists who may not have access to the best minds all the time because of where they are located (e.g. rural doctors.)

That isn't the complete profile of a well rounded doctor -- its the knowledge of a number of patients that may have not always had what one thinks of as a "successful turnout." From there, years of experiences with medication lets one hone in on safer choices of medications because they already have had experience with a number of prior patients, not to mention CE credits, conferences, etc.. Biochemical disorders are a moving target -- getting well in a "short time" is a great thing but its not always realistic. I should know. I'm sure a number of individuals here do too.

> I wonder how they got on that list?

I recognize one of the names here on the west coast vaguely, but this is no means of an exhaustive list.
