> How does a pdoc end up on a top pdoc list anyway? I'm just curious. Is it because statistically they have many more patients that get well compared to other pdocs? Is it because they attend a lot of seminars and conferences? Is it because they do research and writings? They try off-label strategies a lot? They've had extensive post-graduate training? They can improve the most complicated cases that other pdocs couldn't?

Yes.

Networking among doctors helps the quality of life in patients who may not be seeing "the top doc", because of the trickle down theory. Meetings, journal (confidential anonymous notes) clubs, and other such things lead to better education of psychiatrists who may not have access to the best minds all the time because of where they are located (e.g. rural doctors.)

> I guess the bottle line in my opinion is that if they have a majority of patients get well in a short time with few trials and errors, that would be a top pdoc in my mind. All the other stuff doesn't matter.

That isn't the complete profile of a well rounded doctor -- its the knowledge of a number of patients that may have not always had what one thinks of as a "successful turnout." From there, years of experiences with medication lets one hone in on safer choices of medications because they already have had experience with a number of prior patients, not to mention CE credits, conferences, etc.. Biochemical disorders are a moving target -- getting well in a "short time" is a great thing but its not always realistic. I should know. I'm sure a number of individuals here do too.

I recognize one of the names here on the west coast vaguely, but this is no means of an exhaustive list.
