Proper sleep, Depression and Social Anxiety?!

Posted by Larz on October 1, 2006, at 5:26:22

Hello, I have noticed some remarkable thing about my patterns of sleep and SA. If I go to sleep at the time my body tells me (at about 23:30 or so) then I would wake up at 6:00 -6:30. and if I get out of bed immediately as I wake up then I will have an energized day, SA minimal and no depressive feelings. However, if I just sleep for little more, say 1 hour or even less, then my whole day gets bad, like feeling socially anxious, little depressive, low energy... This gets worse if I go to bed late at night, like 1 or 2 am..

Can sleep have such a dramatic effects?! Any similar experiences?!

For me it looks that I should stick to a pattern of going to sleep at 23 and waking up at 06...

P.S. I get some depressive feelings only if I mess with sleep, but if not then they are no place to be found!

Hope many would share ideas/experiences ! Thanks.

Yes. The body's circadian rhythm can be that demanding of its owner that that it be maintained that precisely. There are actually several body clocks, sometimes known as X and Y clocks. However, the X clock is the main timekeeper, and resides in the suprachiasmatic nucleus of the hypothalamus. It is cellular. It's the thing that likes to wake you up regularly at the same time every day. The Y clocks are the hormonal clocks that are set into motion by the act of waking up, becoming alert, and moving around. When the Y clocks become desynchronized with the X clock, there's trouble. I experimented with this when I was younger. My results yielded the following: Regardless of what time you go to sleep, wake up and become alert and active at exactly the same time (within minutes) each day, even if it is only for five minutes. Then you can go back to sleep. So, if you wish to stay out until 3:00am, wake up at 6:30am, put on some lights, and go get a drink of orange juice. Then you can go back to bed and wake up at noon. You will have synchronized your X and Y clocks, and all will be right with the world.

Apparantly, you are very sensitive to desynchronization and have a very narrow window within which you need to synchronize. So, WAKE UP!

Where did you find this info? My whole system seems screwed up and I can't figure out how to reset it or figure out what I need to function at my best. I sometimes envy those people who were put in "caves" with little light to see what their natural cycle was. I wonder if I have a strange anti-social cycle which requires enourmous amounts of sleep. River.

I don't know. Stuff I've read over the years.

SCN = suprachiasmatic nucleus of the hypothalamus = site of the internal circadian master clock

It's funny, but there doesn't seem to be as much talk of X and Y clocks today as there was 10 years ago. Actually, there doesn't seem to be any. I don't know what happened. I really liked the idea. I think behavior can initiate activity of organs and glands that begin individual clocks separate from the master clock in the SCN. If this is true, then desychronization is possible. I think cortisol is one such hormone.

There are disorders of the circadian clock. Can you describe your sleep pattern? Do you find yourself needing to go to sleep at 7:30pm and wake up at 4:30am?

In what ways are you anti-social? Or are you just not available to be social because you are in bed sleeping?

Do you need to go to bed early at night? Do you find yourself waking up to early?
