Seasonal Affective Disorder

Posted by Triolian on September 27, 2006, at 18:52:13

Here we go again. Anyone else starting to feel it already ? It's the end of September in Pennsylvania, and the gunmetal grey is settling in already, and settling into my mind too. What to do ? At least we have a small place down South. I'm going there for two weeks, another two weeks of summer. But then I'll return to the beginning of the end. Six more months of cold and gloom.
What's wrong with global warming ? I welcome it, and wish it would happen tomorrow. Living in the tropics without moving everything - a dream come true.

Ya reckon? I travel 6,000 miles to enjoy your winter weather. Here you get skin cancer, the sun blasts everything flat, there's no rain and everything dies.

Been there, done that (lights called Alaska something or other). Didn't help at all.

tell me about it, I got pretty bad sunburn today and it was only 22c (72f). The sun is so harsh in the southern hemisphere and it's only sept!!!! We need rain bad.

Funny about SAD, I'm having a bad time at the moment and it's getting warmer and the days are getting longer. I usually go down in autumn, not spring, what's up with that?????

Bummer that light therapy didn't work for you. It's very helpful for me if I'm diligent about using it every day. For me I also need to try to use it at roughly the same time every morning. That makes weekends a bit of a drag as I have to get up earlier than I'd like. As much as I hate that, it's really better for my sleep patterns and overall mood if I am consistent with sleep/wake patterns, though.

I use both the Apollo Go-lite, which is blue light, and a 10K lux, full spectrum lamp depending on what I'm doing and what room I'm in when I "put in my lamp time". The Go-lite is so much more portable, I tend to use that most. If blue light didn't work for you under recommended useage, you might try a full spectrum lamp.

Take care and enjoy your tropical escape. :)

Maybe (I dunno if I'd be let in). Philadelphia? Near Pittsburgh? Queer as Folk or something? I could wear one of those cool leather coats.

Nope, south-central Pennsylvania, near Gettysburg. Miles to Philadelphia: (I never go there) 120. Miles to Pittsburgh: (I never go there either) 193. Miles to New York: 193 (I'd go there !) Miles to Washington: 90. Lots of mountains, streams, farms, and on the fringe of the Pennsylvania Dutch country. Ski resorts if you want 'em (gotta wait until late November/early December for enough cold to make snow). Oh, my God, I used the S word.

Declan do you like ice and snow mounds of snow to shovel all the time. And ice on the sidewalks and roads? I was from the North East most of my life and inside all the time unless you want to freeze. Boots, gloves, scarfs, sand on the roads for traction or trapped in your house til the road is plowed? That's why so many people move here toward the South. Yes we may wear a coat but average temp in the 50's in winter. Of course you can have hot and cold spells too. All our neighbors are either from the North or Florida. I'll take Australia any day. Love Phillipa ps this is North Carolina

Yep, PJ. I want ice/snow on the ground at least 3 months a year. I was reading about this little girl in Siberia in the excellent "Imperium". The author sees her in light clothes skipping through freezing puddles and says 'aren't you worried about getting cold?' and the little girl laughs and says 'What? When the ice has already melted and it's almost spring?'

If you call Pennsylvania the South, what do you call the North ?

Hi, gg. I wondered: you use the blue light, which I've heard is (or may be) more effective than full-spectrum.

At the time I considered it, though, I also read that there was concern that it could somehow affect one's vision.

Do you know if that's been disproven, or proven not to be a valid question?

Cause I use a regular light, with some benefits ( on sleep, not mood), but not as much as I'd like.

thanks,

Jost

I have no idea, sorry. I haven't noticed any changes in my vision since I began using it.

When you said 90 miles to Washington I thought it sounded like the south. Where in the States? Vermont? Supposed to be snowy? It was alright for Solzhenitsen.

Declan Washington DC has lots of snow too. If you go South of Virginia not much snow if you stay near the coast or Florida, or inland Arizona parts of it like Pheonix. California but only parts of it there too. Love Phillipa

Does the "blue light" actually appear blue? That seems odd to me. Do you use it in the morning or at night? I know most recommend mornings, which really isn't possible for me.

Hi Jealibeanz

There is just a tinge of blue (though there is a model which actually has a tinge of green, though it technically emits wavelengths withing the blue spectrum). It is usually recommended to be used in the morning. I use it while at my computer in the a.m. Hope you're doing better. Saturn.
