Neurontin?

Posted by deuce224 on September 18, 2006, at 21:09:59

Has anyone out there tried neurontin? What were your symptoms and how did it work for you. I have anxiety and depression and have tried alot of A.D.'s. Currently taking Parnate and it really doesn't help much. Any info would be appreciated. -joe

Multi-drug regime for a complex somatiform disorder.

It works better at the beginning than as you get acclimatized to it, in my view. I think it still provides an adjunctive to the benzodiazepines I take but it, at least for me, is not a benzodiazepine replacer.

It's fairly harmless as its bloodlevel is self-limiting. Beyond around 900mg at a time one just eliminates it out the body. Side effects commonly at the beginning would be somnolence and mild speech impairment and perhaps angling more in the diahrrea direction. At least thats what I recall. Nothing particularly aggravating.

For some it also has nerve pain reduction.

Hi Joe,
I have taken Neourontin for 5 years as a mood stbilizer for bipolar disorder. Presently I take 1200 mg-600 am and 600 pm. I have had no EPS from it. It seems to work.

I am on the exact combo,well close.Parnate Nuerontin,partial depakot,klonopin.

Alone as the previous poster stated it cant replace a benzo, however in conjunction with a benzo it can not only lower its use,but aid it for some in a matter that a benzo alone can produce.

It seems to have a synergy for me with klonopin, dose ranges vary, this is the closest i can come to any form of being functional.

Im hoping as i have openly expressed to replace it with lyrcia if a doc is willing to let me,in hopes that it can possably allow me to lower parnate and unlike nuerontion provide more of a energitic mood elevating property,i need and want to be less reliant on parnate, and if altgother give it a vaction.

Of all the mood stablizers ive used, this and gabaitril are probuably the most tolerable, that can also be however because they are consiered by some to be the weakest.

Last with Nuerontion being generic now,you can get it with insurance fairly cheap.

Back when i was still doing the anti-depressant roulette i talked to my doctor about neurotin. He seemed like he wanted to stay as far away from it as possible because of the whole controvery surrounding off label advertising shennanigans.

Yeah, dont know how much truth is to it,personaly dont doubt much of it,but i read that it went so far as reps sitting in on appts....reps specificaly demostrating and recomedning the use of it for mental disorders.

As well as seminars being given to docs on it for this use,all unallowed in off labeling use.

They were doing CYA, otherwise known in the medical license scene as Cover Your ***, and distancing from a controversy. It was resolved, and the distributors were sanctioned to the best of my knowledge. Its irrelevant now because it is generic anyhow and has been for a while and has at least two regular generic suppliers.

I was started on Neurontin about 8 years ago or so to help give the Marplan I was taking at the time a boost. It worked and almost caused a euphoric feeling. I am not on Marplan anymore due to weight gain but am still on Neurontin, why I don't know (lol) The euphoric feeling didn't last and now I really don't feel much of anything from it. But when I try to stop it I become depressed so I guess it is still doing something in there. I used to take massive doses of the stuff (about 2400 mg daily) but now take only about 200mg a day. The good thing is I don't believe it is doing me any harm.

I was on Neurontin for about 3 months and it diminished my memory. Sure, it helped with the anxiety but, I couldn't focus in school or have any real stimulating conversations or experience that I could remember. I really didn't like that. I have been on meds since I was 15 or so. (Buspar, Zoloft, Wellbutrin...) I have been on Effexor XR for 2yrs now and I am the happiest with it as opposed to any other. There are sexual side effects and others you may experience, but if you have a healthy sex drive...that can be overcome. Within the first 2mos the side effects are the worst, but after I got through that I've been great. If you take the full dose 225mg of Effexor it works on levels of both serotonine and norepinephrine. My sister and I have had, overall, success with it. Neurontin is just not something that I would, personally recommend for you if you are proactively trying to deal with your anxiety/depression. Of course, we must be proactive in behavior modifications and chemistry manipulation.

Most people wouldent be i imagine using it monotherapy, where ur right it will simply accumalte and make u smart as a brick.

However for some,as a addition,it can be a more tolerable mood stablizer as well as help with anxiety and social withdrawal.

This is giving it the benifit of the doubt of its effectivness.

But all in all,if your using it with a anti depressant then you more than likly should be using it at a fair dose, and not experiancing the dumbness unless ur anit depressant is a sedating kind itself, such as remeron.

But in a case like mine for instance, where my anti depressant can be somewhat activating,it goes well with lowering a benzo at times.
