celexa and bruising

Posted by nellie7 on July 31, 2006, at 14:53:51

Hi,

Does anyone know if celexa or other SSRIs can cause one to bruise a lot? And if so, can these drugs cause internal bleeding?

Thanks.

Yes and yes. SSRIs increase the risk of being admitted into the hospital for abnormal bleeding 2-6 fold.

There are actually serotonin reuptake sites on blood platelets. Serotonin plays a role in platelet aggregation, but I'm not sure of the exact mechanisms involved. SSRIs prevent serotonin from entering the platelets and thus disturbs the clotting process.

Wow- I never thought of this. I've got a wicked bruise on my arm right now. bigger than a poker chip. the injury wasn't that severe, and it didn't hurt that much either. oh well, I guess I can use it to coordinate my outfits. first blue, then purple, then brown, now mauve. later on green and my favorite-- the icky yellow color :o)

I'd like to add that the ssnri I'm on (cymbalta) also makes me kind of dizzy once in a while, so I run into things more often too. (bonk* ouch!)

Too many drugs, too many doctors, too many Excerpta Medica abstracts, too many medical journals, too many Medline searches, too much Googling, too much thinking, not enough living.

I am on lexapro & when I first starting taking it I had bruising but as my body got used to the lex the bruising subsided. Every now & then I get one but not like I used to. Dr. told me not to worry about it. I didn't & I'm still here.LOL. \

I have taken celexa for years and for some reason the bruising appeared only now.

You ought to get your platelets checked, IMO. Low platelets (depending on how low) can be a serious problem, if you happen to have an injury that causes bleeding.

I had low platelets on parnate, possibly dosage-related, after about 2 years. More than that, probably-- having ignored various bruises-- by the time I got it tested, it had been a while, and my platelet count was quite depressed.

Platelets regenerate quickly-- a few weeks--so if it;s celexa, after you stop, the time frame to recovery is short.

It's a very simple blood test-- of course, going off the drug is the hard part--

but to be on the sake side, you should check it out.
