Wellbutrin or Buspar?

Posted by TrishP on July 6, 2006, at 8:33:58

I am taking 75mg of Effexor and I feel great! BUT - I am having sexual side effects fromt the Effexor. What can I add to it to to counter that? Also - I am feeling a bit high strung.

If you're feeling a bit high-strung, I wouldn't take more than 150 mg Wellbutrin, preferably as XL. I think Wellbutrin has a better chance than Buspar of helping you...just my opinion.

I don't know what you're being treated for...I guess if the wellbutrin is causing minor problems at start-up, you could wait it out, and see if it goes away, as long as it isn't too troubling.

Some docs give benzos on a very short-term basis during early treatment with ADs; apparently, for some people, adding an anti-anxiety agent for a week or so makes the start up bearable, and then after that the problems are minimal. Maybe that would help?

BuSpar is an odd drug, so I really don't know what to say there...some people find it quite helpful with anxiety and depression, some people find it doesn't help, and others find that BuSpar has intolerable side effects. Its kind of a toss up.

My personal approach would probably be to call the doc and see about a short-term fix for the agitation, and maybe start up the BuSpar at the same time if you'd like to take it. Or you could try going with just the effexor or just the wellbutrin, possibly with BuSpar mixed in...

what kind of directions is your doc giving you?

Do said to augment the Effexor with Wellbutrin 100 mg. I did that today and I feel like a zombie. Wellbutrin actually makes me feel a little tired.

Will Provigil help with sexual side effects of the Effexor?

Don't judge that AD by the first day! Stimulation is just around the corner, in all probability...

I don't know about sexual side effects, but Provigil does tend to be mildly uplifting in terms of reducing sedation and fatigue and general depressive "blahs", or at least it does that for some people.

I may very well be wrong, but I think BuSpar can help with the sexual stuff, at least with SSRIs...I think its b/c of the serotonin antagonism.
