how long does it take your ambien to kick in?

At *least* an hour for me, and that's after not eating for at least 3 hours.

I only took it very briefly several years ago and it was about 10 minutes. For me, it was knock out action with NO drowsiness to nodding off.... just completely out.

Typically for me even with chloral hydrate and xanax at least a half hour and only four hours sleep. They the doses had to be repeated. Am I the only one? Love Phillipa

No, that's why they came out with ambien cr (extended release) - to get people over that time when they often wake 3-4 hours later and can't get back to sleep. That's what my pdoc said about it anyway.

Saturn,

Ambien is somewhat inconsistent for me - takes 1/2 hour to an hour. If I don't take my full dose I don't sleep at all.

One thing's for sure I'm not sleeping right now.

The first time, around 1997, 10mg, 15 minutes and the most blissfull almost psychedelic feeling that almost said to me (I'm dramatizing) "sleep, its good."

After that, that transmitter in my brain seemed to be forever "hit". So its hard to say since now I take 20mg along with the large dose of Seroquel I already take. I believe that the Ambien helps me go to sleep but it doesn't provide the power it once did, probably due to repeated exposure to benzodiazepines without a long grace interval.

Lunesta at 3mg was marginally stronger, I'm still trying to place why we switched back to Ambien other than it had a lovely NickelBright(tm) taste, which I didn't particularly mind -- it just said to me it was working.

i'd take 10 zyprexa and 2 xanax about 8:00 and ambien about 9 and by 10:30 i could get into bed.

mike,
You need to take it and go to bed right away. Ambien does not make you feel drowsy, and if you take it and stay up, it does not tend to put you to sleep. It can make you feel quite loopy if you stay up, though.

It usually takes me about 15 minutes. There have been rare occasions when it took hours. I'm really not sure what's going on when that happens.

Also, what dose are you taking?

That's nearly identical to my experience also.

I meant to include this has also been my experience.

Hi GG. It used to work in about 20-30 minutes, but now it seems to take forever. I can lie in bed for hours after taking it.

I've been trying to wean off completely from 15 mgs over the past 6 months or so. Lately I've been averaging 5 a night, but I've gotten as low as 2.5 for several nights in a row. It's not that I sleep well on so low a dose, but that I don't seem to sleep much better when I do increase the dose--which always used to work.

I wish I could somehow "erase" my GABA-A alpha transmitter respondence and have that feeling. One can't even describe the feeling of going from one hour on a midterm to a completely blissful sleep. I don't think all drugs should be euphoric all the time (well... :) But only 2 medications in my life have done so -- Ambien, once (does not have the same effect again), Percocet, once (probably would have the same effect again). I suppose you could add alcohol to the category although the euphoria is not the same and it has negative consequences afterwards. And there was a momentary "ahh" feeling when I switched an entire load of Seroquel from daytime to night for need of not sleeping on the highway while driving. When the full load finally went over, there was a "ahh" again.

4 hours is the half-life of ambien
