stomach problems and mental health???

Posted by spriggy on February 20, 2006, at 22:52:05

I have no idea if there is a relation here or not.. but I have been doing great mentally for the last few months; I've been sick physically but I have felt SO normal mentally for the first time in over a year!

(added note: I don't really have a formal diagnosis; I had one episode of major depression after starting AD's and horrific anxiety w/panic attacks)

Anyway, the last two days' my stomach has been very upset; I've had diarrhea, nausea, and bad stomach cramps in general.

Suddenly, today I have felt SOO "off" mentally. I am depressed, feel kind of weirded out/uncomfortable in my skin, and just all around "off kilter."

Could there be a connection? I don't think the stomach problem's are a result of the mental because the stomach started a week ago before any mental manifestations.

Any thoughts?

OH one more thing- I did have to take antibiotics last month for strep, not sure if they could've messed up my stomach or what.

Hi,
Someone on a post last week was talking about there being serotonin receptors in the stomach. I am not sure if they are correct, but one of my symptoms of an upcoming episode would be stomach troubles.
If you took antibiotics you killed off a lot of the good bacteria as well as the strep. You could try taking a supplement that would replace them or eating yogurt that has live cultures in it. Sorry I can't remember the name of the supplement. Guess its too early in the am.

the supplement is called acidophilus.

are you taking klonopin for panic disorder? it works well for anxiety-induced GI symptoms, although its effect is not on the GI tract per se. TCA's do work directly on the stomach/GI tract and I have found them to work for these symptoms as well.

although nothing is perfect.

thanks all..

Yes, I do take Klonopin- that's the only med I am right now ( .5 mg's daily).

I also take Acidophilus daily and eat organic yogurt at least once a day.

I had IBS/Spastic colon as a kid so I've had stomach problem's for most of my life. They just seem to go away for a while and then pop back up.

THanks for the info.

IBS is also a sign of CFS I think. Fondly, Phillipa

stomach disorder to respond to certain individuals well to certain AD. I believe it has to do with a certain serotonin receptor site which can be triggered with certain agents. men and women differ, but i've found my stomach linked directly to my state of mind. like the poles of a magnet.

so yes AD's can help with all sorts of IBS, GERD, gastritis, as long as you male/female can find the proper set of serotonin (5HT) triggers.

Its similar to the adverse effects SSRI's have on libido. If they do or do not hit the 5HT2b...uhhh site they dont kill sex drive.

For women there is a selective compound called zelnorm.
Similar to an AD, but approved for Irritable Bowel syndrome.
