Sweating (face/scalp)

Posted by ed_uk on October 10, 2005, at 14:31:09

I sweat VERY heavily when I get anxious. It's embarrasing when it happens at work and it sometimes causes my anxiety to spiral out of control.

I take Celexa for anxiety. It helps certain types of anxiety but it aggravates the sweating.

Beta blockers do not reduce the sweating.

Anticholinergic drugs are sometimes effective at reducing sweating. Unfortunately, I find the side effects of anticholinergic drugs to be difficult to tolerate.

I'm considering trying (a low dose of) clonidine.

Any suggestions?

Hey Dimples. Are you sweating so much that it drips down your temples? What about under your arms? I sweat a lot from the Parnate and get huge stains under my arms and on my back. I can feel the sweat trickle down. I hate it.

I will do some research and see what I can come up with. Maybe there is some trick they use in Hollywood for shooting under the hot lights. I know there are astrigents for women that give a matte look to the face. It doesn't look like make-up. It just takes aways the shine. Maybe there is something like that you can use. Again, I will see what I can find out. YOu shouldn't have to take another drug to stop the sweating.

Love,
Maxie

It may actually be the combination of the celexa and the fish oil, are you still taking 5 g's ?

I had the exact same problem when I was taking celexa and loads of fish oil. I would get strange sweating and strange hot flashes etc.

Reducing the fish oil eliminated it, but I was disapointed that I had to reduce the fish oil.

If you are still taking the fish oil, it may be this, (esp since the anticholinergics seem to help)

and so do many others. when we get anxious, it is common to sweat or have a "hot flash." i had one tonight and hated it. i dont think any med will stop them.

just know that it will pass eventually

It sounds like your metabolism is running on high speed. Checked your thyroid lately? Just a thought.

Hi Ed
So it's drug related. Methadone does the same thing, at any decent dose. Which probably means the only way to sweat less is to take less of the citalopram (sp?). What's it mean though for you, for your liver or thermostat or whatever it is? I take it for granted that it's reasonable to call this toxicity. It is with methadone. OTOH when you have problems you have to rank them in some order. So what to do?

Hi Link,

Thank you for your suggestion! Perhaps I should reduce the fish oil from 5g to 1g for a while. What do you think?

Hi Dec,

A lot of drugs cause sweating, especially SSRIs, Effexor and tricyclic ADs.

Kind regards

So glad that other people have this problem too! It can be so embarassing. It is getting cooler here, but it is so easy for me to become hot and sweaty that I still wear sleeveless shirts! (with a cardigan sweater or hoodie over them). I have bigger fish to fry though. I'm still trying to get my mood and stuff under control. Then I'll deal with this. Sigh.

Best,
EE

I have a similar problem with most AD's especially Mirtazipine but instead of sweating profusely, I get a rancid smell like somebody ran over a skunk, even when I just get out of the shower. This also occured before I was on any medication when I was under long periods of stress. Has anyone else experienced this unpleasant side effect and does it have to do with heightened cortisol activity?

No idea about cortisol activity. But when I was taking methadone 40mg/d and Valium 15mg/d, I was unwell and you could smell it. I'd sweat most of the time too, in winter and at nights. Summer was terrible.

botox for sweating

Hi:
I know people have great success with Botox injections in their armpits. It is very expensive, but lasts for up to four months. I don't know whether it would work on your face, but maybe if you got it on your forehead you would stop sweating and look years younger! Another idea, for the armpits is something called Drysol. It is prescription strength Aluminum Chloride. You can get it from a dermatologist and your insurance would probably pick up. This sounds kind of gross, but maybe you could put it on your scalp. I have researched this a lot because I used to have really bad sweating problem--it was a torment. Now my face turns bright red like a tomato from my meds I think. But I am not sweating so much. Good luck!
