Woo hoo!! I've got the wellbutrin!

Posted by Meri-Tuuli on September 8, 2005, at 5:54:51

Okay so here's the story:

Wellbutrin isn't licensed for use in the UK as an AD, but it is licensed for smoking cessatation. So I had a hard time convincing my doc that I thought that I needed the wellbutrin for an AD.

He is a pretty amenable doc, which is a relief and why I keep going back to him!! He had no idea what dosage etc to precribe so he looked up an american patients records and who he is prescribing med for under the prescription from an american pdoc. So there you go.

So I now have a prescription for wellbutrin, well bupropion hydrocl. MR 150mg once a day.

I think he says that I can increase the dose to two a day eventually, I guess that would mean one am and one pm.

What dosages do PBabblers use and what type of wellbutin, ie XL SR or MR???? I really need help here because my doc didn't have a clue and it won't be in the leaflet thing.

The reason why I got him to do it is because I haven't tried it before, and I'm hoping it will help with my ADD tendancies. Also because I knew he would give me a prescription, and I am moving to a different part of the country I didn't what to go to a new doc only to be told no. I am thinking that I should probably augument with an SSRI eventually (I can't handle the side effects of a SSRI) and this way its easier to convince the doc that I should use wellbutrin as well.

Here in the UK virtually no GPs prescribe wellbutrin + SSRI because wellbutrin isn't licensed for use as an AD. Which is such a shame. And they think we are the crazy ones????????

Sigh.

That is so interesting about UK docs being hesitant to rx things for other uses. It is done pretty routinely in the US. For example, for my depression i take Neurontin (it's really a drug for seizures), Dexedrine (it's really a drug for ADHD), and Lithium (although I think that it might actually be approved for regular depression too, not juts BP, but I'm not sure.) Seems like our docs don't mind a little experiment.

But rest assured, it is often just as hard to find a good one here!

I'm glad that you got the med you wanted. WB is a good one for lots of folks.

Much luck!

Wow, what a combo. Most GPs won't touch anything unless its a SSRI for straightforward depression - let alone a stim! Anything else you have to get referred to a pysch doc for - there would be probably long waiting lists for. And even then they probably wouldn't prescribe anything that would be of use (well so I'm led to believe) apparently Tom Twilight had to see a private pdoc to get a MAOI. Pdocs on the NHS won't even prescibe MAOIs even. I guess the upside that all this healthcare is free, but maybe not that effective! Sigh. I don't know which is worse!!

Hi Meri-Tuuli,
Here is the US prescribing information for bupropion hydrochloride SR. Also: A link to using the same for SSRI induced sexual problems. I have mixed bupropion SR(up to 300mg) with Nardil in the past with some fairly good relief from orgasm delay and carbohydrate cravings.
Good luck with your new trial.

Yeah, it is a lot of meds, especially when you consider the other 3 meds I take (lexapro, desipramine, ambien). I do see a psychiatrist to get these meds, and she has been really aggressive with treatment and I appreciate that b/c I've felt this way too long. Antidepressants don't work so well on me, I guess.

Actually, it is often hard in the US to see a pdoc b/c we are short of them in general. There is lots of debate about letting psychologists rx meds b/c of the shortage of pdocs. Two states have already okayed it.

There must be some country with a good system out there--I'm not sure which one though!!

Best,
EE

Wellbutrin SR is availabale generically and cheap. XL is expensive and I have heard of people finding it hard to sleep on it.

300 mg is about the most comon dose. I take the SR version. I've never heard of the MR. I also take 300 mg. I take 3-100 mg tablets, 2 in the morning and 1 at lunch. You probably won't want to take the 2nd pill you are taking, in the evening. I might suggest taking it around 1-3 pm, since you are taking 2-150 mg pills. If you take it too late in the day you won't sleep.

Hiya,

Okay, I take Wellbutrin XR 300 mg daily. And it's the best thing ever; seriously, I took so many different SSRI's and they were useless for me. I hope it works well for you too!

So, I also have ADD and take Adderall (I was taking Adderall before I started taking Wellbutrin); after I started taking the Wellbutrin I noticed that it really helped with my ADD. It paired with the Adderall made my symptoms totally managable.

I was talking with my Dr. recently and he told me that GSK (who produces Wellbutrin) performed a study, giving patients with ADD 450mg of Wellbutrin daily, and it had pretty great success. It's a pharmacutical company, and they are generally pretty evil, but I think they're on track with this one.

Okay, also, XL vs. SR. I took SR for a while, and after I switched to XL I had less 'dips' throughout the day; I am stable from waking to sleep. Man, I'm such a big fan of this medication! I'm in college now, finally, and coping better than I would have been. Actually, I probably wouldn't even be here without it.

Hope this helps!
Mialu

Hi, My wife told me that a number of people on her overstressed staff were taking wellbutrin. My Pdoc gave me samples of 300mg XR. Okay, i seem to be feeling a bit better, also taking 40 mgs. of prozac. But I'm a large person, 290, 6'2
and I wonder about this "Well, let's start at the low dosage." bit. Frankly, I'm sick of being depressed. I want to get out of this muck.
My p-doc worries that I'll get hyper. So waking up in the morning and doing things is hyper. So feeling that there is some hope in this world is hyper. I'm supposed to be bipolar II . My *ss. I'm depressive. and I don't care if i'm hyper...at least I talk to people and get my *ss up and do what has to be done. Hey, I apologize if I'm big. But minimal dosages are a waste of my money. I'm better off investing in cheap vodka...at least I feel, at least for a while, a sense of well-being. The rest of the time is the pits. Cockeyed.

Hey Cockeyed,
The dosage prescribed might not be as low as you think. Fluoxetine and bupropion are metabolized by the same enzyme P450-CYP2D6. This can lead to higher blood levels of either compound. By starting at lower levels, the potential chance of a drug interaction can be minimized.
Take care,
Jedi
