Question about Topamax Dosage....???

Posted by honeychica on August 12, 2005, at 2:38:42

I am being treated by a pdoc who insists that anyone on a benzo is addicted to benzos, and she has out right refused to prescribe them to me despite severe PTSD and GAD, due to incest, and ritual torture/sexual assault. I have been on Paxil from 1995 to 2001 then switched to Effexor XR 225 mg til 1 month ago, because of negative side effects, now Lexapro 10 mgs and a slow taper of the Effexor. Paxil gave me horrific withdrawals aNd Effexor is too but not as bad with the initiation of Lexapro, still got the "head ZAPS"....anyways, I suffer from panic attacks every day, I am hyper vigilant and yet dedicated to my recovery and have not abused drugs or alcohol for over 4 years now. I have been hospitalized for psychiatric reasons a few times and when given small doses of Ativan, have done very well, in that my blood pressure goes down immediately to normal, my panic attacks subside, it's documented....

Why the hell won't these jerks help me???? I am suffering and I can't work because of my mental illnesses! I am limited in funds and transportation and going to another psychiatrist would mean going to another counselor, I can't count how many damn counselors I've been to in the past 3 years alone!!! Not my choice either, it's because of health care coverage or they have babies or they move or they get new jobs or whatever...I am so at the end of my rope and I do not deserve to be treated like some drug addicted freak, especially since I've come so far and through so much!

So, they put me on Topamax, 25 mgs twice a day and now up to 3 a day big deal...it does NOTHING for me, and she (PDOC) told me after this I am pretty much outta options...nice huh?!?! Said that she won't bother increasing the Topamax above 75 mgs, because it's "inefficascious", well that's NOT what I've read in my reserch on it and from what others post here too!!!!

Any advice would be most welcome, Thanks!

Sorry for ur situation, this "your out of options"or "nothing left to try" or anything to the liking is unfortunatly pretty common.

I think it`s a horrid statement, and i think any p-doc who says this to a PATIENT should have their license revoked!!!

How dare they, that is ther job, their swore oath,no other profession does that,a fireman wont say well its hopeless even if they believed it were, theyd try and try.

It is one of the most discouraging things to hear from a Doctor, and if it makes u feel better i was told that years ago but one of my first doctors, and have since had eons of options some which at one point brought relieaf.

If thats your docs attitude toward ur treatment,i am not surprised at anything they do,or wont do for that matter, and id suggest to start shopping for a new doc.

Hello,

Have you ever tried clomipramine (Anafranil)? It can work well for PTSD, GAD and panic attacks.

Thanks so much for taking the time to respond, yes, she's a real bitch, her license plate says "MND-DOCTR", s that is pretty offensive to me, she's just an RN anyways! She knows I can't stand her and I had stopped seeing her altogether and was being treated by my PCP for my anxiety and they put me on Buspar, which is supposed to be pretty mild right? Well, lucky me had some kind of REALLY BAD reaction to it while in Maine at our Camp on the Lake and I tried to drown myself and the ambulance came and I was hospitalized and my poor Mom didnt know what the hell happened, and I can't remember any of it but the concensus of the hospital staff was that it was a bad reaction to the Buspar so my PCP immediately referred me to the Psychiatrist at the couseling place I go to NOT to this bitchy RN, I went to see him and after one session he cancels our next appointment and tells me I HAVE to see that RN again from this point on!!! So, I am still fighting to only be seen by the Psychiatrist for personal reasons though, because they have made it clear that they WILL NOT TREAT ME WITH ANY BENZOS EVER.
Sometimes I wish I could roll actual footage of me being held against my will and raped and beaten for days to show to this woman, and then ask her if she thinks benzos wouldnt benefit me, considering the perp and his entire r*dneck family live less than a 1/4 mile up the street still from me and I fear for my life every second of every day....

She can kiss my a$$....

Hello, thanks so much for posting. No, I haven't even heard of it, as a matter of fact until tonite, while reading a book called "The Broken Mirror" about Body Dismorphic Disorder, I guess they use it to treat that, which I have, and now you're telling me about it, so I will definitely ask about it. I do a lot of medication research myself though because for example this RN I am dealing with claims that I have some kind of "peculiar sensitivity" to anti-deppressants and thats why I have such severe withdrawal from them physically. LMAO@!!!!! She also claims that Paxil does NOT have withdrawals like Effexor does. Bullcrap!!! It's all over the internet, not just here, from patients all over the world about the horrific withdrawal effects of Paxil and Effexor!!! There are HUGE class action lawsuits against the drug companies for not warning patients about them either so I am sorry she is either ignorant or is purposefully sugar coating information about the withdrawal effects of these drugs!!! So, she even knows full well I do my own research thank you very much...I don't just blindly take any old pill she throws my way, no way. She had me on Risperdol before and I didnt get my period for almost a year!!! She forgot to mention THAT little side effect! What if I had gotten pregnant???? Or was trying to??? She's got so many patients she doesnt know whos coming or going anyways. I am ranting sorry....I will ask about the anafranil though. Thanks again.

I'd just like to plug the double double quotes feature at this site:

http://www.dr-bob.org/babble/faq.html#amazon

The first time anyone refers to a book, movie, or music without using this option, I post this to try to make sure he or she at least knows about it. It's just an option, though, and doesn't *have* to be used. If people *choose* not to use it, I'd be interested why not, but I'd like that redirected to Psycho-Babble Administration:

Thanks!
