Positive data for insomnia drug

Ramelteon, a drug under investigation in the US for the treatment of insomnia, has been shown to help adults fall asleep faster and sleep for longer. The trial involved 405 adults receiving ramelteon 8mg or 16mg or placebo each night for 35 nights. Improved sleep patterns were seen after one week. The drug works by targeting two receptors in the brain, MT1 and MT2.

The data were presented at a meeting of the Associated Professional Sleep Societies last month.

MT1, and MT2? Haven't heard of these receptors. What are they, and do they interact with other systems?

They're melatonin receptors.

Why not just take melatonin.
Isn't melatonin a melatonin receptor agonist ??

I don't think melatonin works for insomnia, at least not for me. Maybe this drug will be better than melatonin.

Believe it or not before it got all the bad press and was pulled from the US market I took it. It made me feel like I didn't want to breath. Fondly, Phillipa

Hi Phillipa
You can't buy melatonin in health food shops (you have them?) in the US any more? I didn't know that. What was the bad PR?

I have a supply, and while it doesn't seem to help anxiety induced insomnia, it did seem to help regular tossing and turning.

Hi Declan and Phillipa: Melatonin IS available in the US -- just bought some about a week ago (I live in CA) after reading an earlier thread suggesting trying it for Parnate insomnia. It seems the standard is 3mg tablets. My doctor said I could try it if I wanted but that she was wary of it since it's a hormone and largely unregulated since it's sold without a prescription. I tried 1.5mg one night and it did nothing -- might try it again if Restoril stops working completely. Hope this helps. Take care, Lauren

Melatonin definitely helped me get to sleep and I usually only need about 1 mg. or 1.5 mg. It didn't tend to keep me asleep through the night though. I tried a 1 mg. sustained release dosage and that did keep me asleep all night. The problem there was that i was too groggy in the morning.

There are others who have posted here who have had a lot of success with it so i definitely wouldn't rule it out without trying it.
