Insomnia is horrible -Advice Please

Posted by Tom Twilight on June 21, 2005, at 7:21:47

Since coming of Mirtazapine I have had a nightmare time going to sleep :(

Sleeping badly is turning me into a mental reck

I would like to try a benzo or something like Ambien, Unfortunatly I live in the UK and my GP will not willingly prescribe these drugs.

I'm wondering what other drugs are good for sleep?
Anti histamines don't work for me, I don't want to go back to Remeron, Trazadone works but makes me into a zombie the next day!

I was thinking of a sedating TCA like Dothiepin or a Neuroleptic like Olanzapine

Please advise, I'm getting desperate

Dothiepin certainly sent me off to sleep but unfortunately made me tired 24/7.

Olanzapine made me tired initially but the tiredness wore off pretty quickly.

I found Zopiclone to be a good sleep drug but if your doctor is anti benzo he might be anti that too. The only side effect I got from it is a nasty taste in my mouth, I cant overstate just how evil the taste was!

Personally I would confront your dr about the anti benzo attitude. If you say you just want a sleep med for the short term til you can get your sleep pattern together s/he can hardly claim your outside the scope of the drug.

My dad find nitrazepam and temazepam to both be good sleep drugs though generally prefers zopiclone because he says the sleep feels more natural.

Hope this is some help, Bunny

Lunesta is excellent.

Hi Tom :-)

>I don't want to go back to Remeron....

Can you taper a little more gradually?

Kind regards,
Ed.

Hi Buns!

Me too. Amitriptyline was the same.

Kind regards,
Ed.

Hi Tom!

I think you'd probably find that these drugs caused more side effects than Remeron. I'd definitely try to taper Remeron more gradually if possible. If not, a few days treatment with one of the following drugs might be useful if you can get a prescription.......

1. Temazepam
2. Lormetazepam
3. Zopiclone (Zimovane)
4. Zolpidem (Stilnoct)

Kind regards,
Ed.

What about valium? You can get this in the UK. Fondly, Phillipa

How much trazadone were you using? The first time I took it, I took 25 mg and slept 12 hours. The next night it wasn't quite so bad. After another few nights, the morning grogginess wore off more easily.

Neurontin worked well for sleep for me for a while. I had some morning grogginess the first couple of days but then it got better.

What about amitriptyline?

And when I was on Cymbalta, I slept like a baby. Even though I took it in the morning.

I know the hell of insomnia, its very discouraging. But I'm making gradual progress I think. Right now I'm using Lunesta (Zopiclone)and a TCA, Elavil. Sometimes I replace the Elavil with Klonipin. The Lunesta gets me to sleep and the Elavil and/or klonipin helps me to stay asleep. Out of desperation I had a sleep study recently which revealed that I had some obstructed breathing so I'm giving a CPAP machine a try. I'm sure there are psychological factors as well that keep me on edge. I used to also wake up with back pain. I'm happy to report now though that after practicing Tai Chi for several months my mid-night backpain had gone away.

good luck ~ Jake
