Scared of Effexor? PMDD bad...

Posted by TrishP on June 3, 2005, at 15:20:24

Ok. So I love the Wellbutrin and I will take the Risperdal during the really bad PMDD times, but after reading all the posts about Effexor, I'm scared. I don't do well on SSRIs, so my doc said I should add Effexor to help with the PMS/PMDD mood swings.

Any thoughts? I'm scared...

A lot of people report terrible withdrawal from Effexor, but withdrawal for me, after several months of use has been quite easy.

It just goes to show you wont inevitably have bad withdrawals.

I didn't have any side effects, other than sexual dysfunction even at doses of 225mg

Having said all that it didn't really seem to help, even at high doses.

If its the withdrawal that you are most concerned about there are ways to deal with it. I had pretty tough withdrawal from Effexor but then my doctor told me that taking a small dose of Prozac would help the Effexor to leave my system more slowly. It worked great. I took 20mg once and then another 20mg a few days later when I felt the brain shiver thing again and then that was it. Done. No more withdrawal.

I agree that the potential for Effexor to produce a withdrawal syndrome should not dissuade people from using such an effective drug. If one is educated how to go about discontinuing Effexor (or any other SRI antideperssant), it no longer becomes such a potent issue.

I have read studies suggesting that taking 1200mg of calcium a day can significantly relieve the mood symptoms of PMS. I don't know if it would be helpful for PMDD, though.
