Risperdal rare side effect

Posted by yesac on May 28, 2005, at 13:57:08

They say that Risperdal can increase prolactin levels... which results in some weird side effects for both men and women. Supposedly it's rare though.

Well, I took Risperdal about 2 years ago and this didn't happen, but yesterday, after taking only 1mg for only two days, I started to notice the effects. Basically, I started lactating... I mean liquid was, you know, coming out of my boobs. And not only that but they started hurting tremendously. Like I'm pregnant or something, which I am not!

Has anyone had this? I guess I can't take it anymore.... I don't think that this will go away if I keep taking it, and it's not something that I can just deal with.

I also wonder if it could have something to do with birth control. When I took Risperdal 2 years ago, I was not on birth control, but now I am. In any case, I don't want anything screwing with my hormones so much, so I guess I'm through with it.

hey! There is a medicine that can be used when this happens...it helps with symptoms like you have, but I think there's still an increase in prolcatin. Personally, I can't stand risperdal. Of all the atypicals (excluding clozapine), it seems like the roughest. It raises prolactin levels, its been the cause of several lawsuits regarding tardvie dyskinesia, so on and so forth. If you **must** take an antipsychotic, I'd seriously suggest Abilify...or seroquel or geodon. Good luck!

Hi

I lactate on all antipsychotics and it starts within 2-3 days of taking them. It is VERY painful. My doctor said that sometimes putting of the side effect can be worth it ... he is male. It is so painful that I would wake up in the middle of night when I turned over. This is not a side effect that goes away.

However, since it didn't happen to you the first time, you should get your prolactin level checked. You need to wait 4 months from this last episode and go the week after you have had your period.

Yeah, it was pretty painful last night and all of today. I'm hoping it'll go away soon.

Why would I get the level checked if I just go off of it? I mean is there some reason that I need to know what the level is? And do you mean wait 4 months since the lactation that's been occuring recently?

I don't know, I'm not taking it now and maybe I'll just stay away from it. Seroquel has not done this to me. Zyprexa hasn't either, but I only take that on rare occasions. I hope that if I increase my dose of S, which I am thinking of doing, it won't start to happen.

Do you think that if I took a lower dose of Risperdal this effect would still happen?

Yeah, thanks. I think I'm going to stop taking it (well, I already have actually).... I'm already taking Seroquel and I like it except it makes me too tired and I can't get to a high enough dose to control my agitation. I've tried Abilify-- hated it, made me more agitated. Never tried Geodon.

Just for curiosity's sake... what's the medicine that controls the lactation problems?

Hi

Sometimes people develop tumours in their pituatary gland which raises your body's prolactin level. If you were able to take it before without lactating and then now you are lactating, then something in your body might have changed. And yes, you have wait 4 months since the lactation occured. I will be getting mine checked in July sometime.

At the same time you can take Zyprexa or Seroquel without it happening so there is probably nothing wrong. If you are going to continue with the anti-psychotic, you can't have your levels checked (to see if you have naturally high level).

You could try a lower dose, but I would just increase the Seroquel since so far you know it's okay. If you start to lactate on that then you will know that there is only a certain dosage your body can handle. I lactate on them all.

Maybe you should give your body a break before you increase the Seroquel?

Ed, what is the name of the med. I know it begins with a B, but that's not much help! LOL!
