Seroquel 12.5mg Alcohol

Posted by Anon05 on May 12, 2005, at 15:31:13

I take 2.5mg of Lexapro (weaning off) and 150 of Wellbutrin XL and can drink as much as I want. My pysch prescribed 12.5mg of seroquel at night and I've been taking it for 4 or 5 days now. Is it ok to drink?

Yea, you can

I take 300mg/day seroquel and am able to drink. It can enhance the sleepiness factor for some people - which the reason why it says not to take with alcohol on the label. My doc even said that drinking was okay, that nothing bad would happen if i did drink.

You mean it won't affect you like it's supposed to with benzos? Fondly, Phillipa

I don't know anything about benzos, to be honest. But my doc specifically told that it was okay if I did drink on this (not that she was recommending that I drink all the time, of course). Obviously, alcohol does add one more thing for the liver to process and alcohol is a CN depressant. But the interaction of seroquel and alcohol is this benign as far as I know.

And I have tested this quite a bit. I dont notice a difference in my reaction to alcohol before and after being on seroquel.

My dx is BP, towards cyclothymia range. Seroquel helps (a lot) with hypomania and panic attacks.

I was always told that benzos and alchohol could depress your respirations and you could die. The pdoc I worked with was apalled that the pdoc I was seeing knew and let me drink 5-6beers nightly. A couple of days later I was hospitalized for what turned out to be an elevated TSH and my synthroid had to be upped. Meanwhile the pdoc switched me to chloral hydrate for sleep. Well you can't drink with this as it becomes a Mickey Finn. Now I'm off of it after 8 years, but am scared to death to drink with the valium I'm on. The pdoc's brainwashed me. But I want to add that when I took xanax and drank the beer I felt and functioned very highly. Now I don't and have developed all kinds of phobias. Fondly, Phillipa

> I was always told that benzos and alchohol could >depress your respirations and you could die.

This is potentially possible but not particularly highly likely. It was much more of a problem in the days of barbiturates which is why those are nearly off the shelves. It depends on a lot of factors, probably body weight, the amount of benzodiazepine(s) that are currently being taken, and how soon the alcohol is ingested after taking a particular dose (the serum spike would occur shortly after the dose).

This is not to say that one should take 30mg of klonopin and tie one on an hour later. DONT. But a modest amount of benzodiazepine dosage and occasionally drinking, especially not around the time of ingestion or ingestion on an empty stomach, is unlikely to cause any significant respiratory depression. Just play it sensible.

>Meanwhile the pdoc switched me to chloral hydrate >for sleep. Well you can't drink with this as it >becomes a Mickey Finn. Now I'm off of it after 8 >years

This is quite a possible scenario -- DONT. You're quite correct. Chloral hydrate greatly accentuates alcohol because its manufacture and compound is closely related to ethanol itself.

>but am scared to death to drink with the valium >I'm on. The pdoc's brainwashed me.

I'm not going to play doctor here or advocate the ingestion of alcohol. But, again, if the dosage is reasonably small and the prior precaution is taken not to take them too close together, its doubtful too much would happen. There is more to worry about with consistent drinking and benzodiazepines that extensively use the liver to metabolize. There's more worry in overtaxing the organ.
