Clomipramine is much more powerful as an NRI than Effexor, via its desmethyl metabolite, which is about equipotent to nortriptyline as an NRI.
Clomipramine is also more powerful as an SRI, but probably Effexor's low affinities for the NE and serotonin transporters are offset by its low level of protein binding.
A friend of mine who is currently on effexor told me clomipramine was far and away the most powerful AD he had ever taken. I would take it myself, if I could persuade my pdoc to give me a trial.

> LinkadgeHi,
I could not tell you much about Effexor's level. People usually speak of clomipramine as mainly serotogenic...HOWEVER, it turns out that one of its metabolites is in fact very active in the norepinephrine department...apparently it depends on whether you have enough of a particular enzyme to break the clomipramine down into this metabolite....so my guess is that how much it acts on norepinephrine is dependent upon your enzyme profile....
And actually I believe for Effexor, it is DOSE dependent, that only at higher doses does it act significanlty on norepinephrine. This is at least from what I understand regarding these two medications.....

I agre, clomipramine was wonderful while it worked for me. I would wish on everyone on this board that feeling of vivaciousness and glee for the time that it worked for me...it wore off...*sigh*

I find that I feel fairly tired in the morning, and then somewhat wired during the day. I also have more palpatitions in the eveneing. I was thinking I was probably getting more of an NE kick in the evening.
I wonder what causes meds to poop. I'm only on 25mg and have certainly felt a poop out.
Mind you, I am supposed to be taking 100mg of the stuff.I just have that fried brain feeling. You know that feeling that as if the doctor has been really giving you crack instead of AD medications.

Hi Link,

Have you tried taking it in divided doses? You could try taking 10mg three times a day.

Ed.
