Cymbalta PLUS Welbutrin?

Posted by Aniadouble on March 4, 2005, at 15:10:33

Can Cymbalta be taken with Webutrin?

I switched from Welbutrin XL 300mg and Zoloft 150 mg to Cymbalta 60 mg about 10 weeks ago. I wanted to try this new drug because the Zoloft & WB started to be less effective (this always happens with all the meds I've been on).

It didn't do any good. I'm not any worse (well, maybe a bit), but I have gained some weight and my cravings for carbohydrates are VERY hard to control and my energy level has really decreased. The Welbutrin controled the weight, the cravings, and it gave me a bit more energy.

My diagnosis is major depression. I've had it all my life and I've been on mdes for over 15 years (I'm 37). Nothing ever really works, meaning; I don't ever feel GREAT. The meds just do enough to keep me going on daily basis. Lately though, I haven't even felt good...
It seems that every year, I just feel worse...

What I would like to know is if I can take Welbutrin in addition to the Cymbalta; what dosage and which type?

Thanks for any suggestions,

Ania

I know this is not going to help, but the way you describe yourself; I can totally relate.

I am also 37 and have tried several meds which "keep me going," but at the level of "blah." I too seem to feel "worse" every year. I hate this darn disease!

I relate totally. I'm older and my depression started 8yrs ago. At first the meds worked but now, they're like candy to me. I simply don't think they work. Maybe we just become immune to them. Fondly, Phillipa

I should know in a week or two. I was taking Cymbalta 60mg (for about 6 weeks) and it was doing a smashing job on my anxiety and depression, but I was having a little problem with amotivation, weight gain (5 pounds in 2 months), and increased blood pressure. Dropped my dose to 40mg to see what would happen. My BP does seem to be going down a bit, but I decided to add Bupropion (the generic form of Wellbutrin) at 75mg in the morning to see if it helps with the amotivation and weight gain. Just started today, so we'll see...

I hope that it works for you. Your doctor oked it - adding the Bupropin? There won't be any weird side effects? Or your head won't explode or anything like that? ;-)

Please let me know how you do.

Thanks Chris. Its good to know that I'm not the only one!

I am so sick and tired of being sick and tired that at times I want all this just to end, but I keep going - who would take care of my dogs and cats... ;-)

Hey Phillipa,
Sorry to hear you're in the similar situation. At least you know what its like to feel "right." I don't think that I have EVER not been depressed.

Oh well, life goes on, and on, and on.....

I'm on Cymbalta and Wellbutrin XL, and there have been no problems in terms of interactions or anything like that. Today was my first day back on a lower dosage of Cymbalta, because of that lethargy, and if this doesn't work we may try upping the Wellbutrin XL from 150 to 300. (We may not, because of an eating disorder. I've gained a lot of weight, but am still not consistent about not restricting and my pdoc is concerned about the seizure risk.)

Hope that helps.

...not like the old-ladies purple, but real royal purple ;-)

Thanks for that!

I'll have to bug my doc to put me back on Welbutrin. They are so hard to convince to try something differemt.

Gonna throw this out just for fun...what part of the world are you in? 10 weeks ago here in the Northeastern U.S., winter had officially arrived and the shortest day of the year (daylight-wise) was upon us. Capital S, Capital A, Capital D.

Any chance the time of year skewed your mood? The carb cravings tipped me off.

Your guess is absolutely correct!!!
I'm in Baltimore, Maryland. I'm soooooooooooooo sick of winter. I know I do have SAD, so yes things get a lot worse for me at the end of winter, but I've experienced the carbs cravings in the summer when I was off Welbutrin.

My love of carbs knows no season! :~D

One more thing--I had read that stopping Wellbutrin can cause "binge" eating and food cravings, especially in people who had eating disorders in the past, and I didn't believe it until I went off WB a month or so back (it was making me irritable) and went on a blueberry muffin rampage.

Yes, my doc totally approved it. I am taking it at a very low dose, just to augment my Cymbalta. Only on day two, so nothing to report yet. I'll give it a week or two...

I haven't heard of the binge effect after stopping WB, but it does make sense to me. That's what happened to me.

I'm going to talk to my doc to see if he'll put me back on it.

Thanks,

Ania
